What kind of value does a 37-year-old defenseman have these days?
Same reason you want him out is the same reason other teams will be hesitant to take him in.

A big haul for him..I don't see it... Chia pet is out of the league... you basically sunk his value with your review. Like you said a 37 yr old... going downhill fast. |

Todd Cordell: The Calgary Flames should consider trading Mark Giordano - ToddCordellCGY
Todd, I think you are way off on this one, I dont see the return to come anywhere close to what he is to the Flames right now. Maybe Im wrong & a GM sees him as the missing piece on the backend, (paging Kyle Dubas!!)
Personally, I think one of the pieces we get would be a 2nd pairing RHD in a Gaudreau trade, among other pieces in the return. Move Andersson up with Gio & let Gio tutor the young kid for top pairing duties. The new RHD acquisition in the Gaudreau trade can play with Hanifin. Then next year I could see Seattle flicking us a few 2nd rounders to expose Gio & see them taking him in the expansion draft for experience on their backend. |

You are pretty spot on .. That is probably the best way forward with Gio. |

I think the team sees what Gio wants. If he wants to chase a cup see what you can get for him. If he wants to stay and mentor let him do that. Guy has earned it. |

I don't know if he gets you a big haul with the contract and the flat cap. I think it's likely more of a cap move OR maybe he is part of a deal to swap salary.
As mentioned, something like Marner for Gio + so the cap hit stays similar? I don't know. I don't get paid to figure this poop out. |

They won't be blowing things up. They had one off year where they were still middle of the pack. That followed a year where they were one of the best teams in the league. Everyone on the team had a bad year. It's never a good idea to trade players when their value is low. Also, get your numbers straight. There are 30 teams they could trade Gio to, he can submit a 10 team list, that's 20 teams they can trade him to.
Since Treliving didn't get canned, I expect the team next year will look mostly the same. He might actually be able to resign Talbot and the defence because of COVID. Don't panic and give the group one more year then trade everyone if things don't work out. Maybe Bennett finally carries his playoff success into the next season. Then they can pair him with Tkachuk and have a fantastic top line, and everyone can stop complaining about Gaudreau and Monahan since they'll be a perfect second line.
The biggest name traded is probably Ryan, maybe Hanifin. |

while I see this move as a way to shake up the leadership and "core" of the team, I don't see a deal that actually improves the team. His best days are passed. Last summer would have been the right time to move him. Anything now would be just a lateral move at best.
Saying that, his role on the team needs to be reduced. He's not the warrior that he used to be. He's not the best D-man when you take regular season and a poor playoffs into consideration. 2 years of bad playoffs. Even if they retain Brodie, they still don't belong on the ice the most minutes of any pairing. Maybe they amp up Valimaki's minutes during the season and him and Ras become the true top pair. Gio and Hanifin can be the 3/4. Getting ahead of myself, but I think the combo of Ras and Valimaki will be the top pair.
On the other hand, if we managed to land Manson or Montour, Gio could play with them. Vatanen would be another possible Brodie replacement. A bit more physical than Brodie. |

A trade of anyone on the core would and should start with Backlund. He was as much a no-show as Monahan. He's been a steady player for Tkachuk, but I think Tkachuk is actually being held back. I mean it's a risk that Bennett won't be as effective in the regular season, but then again Lucic and Dube have been the best players he's had in years. Give him Tkachuk and Mangiapane (or Dube). If that's the case, the reason for having both Backlund and Ryan are lost. |

I thought I saw somewhere that Bennett was getting eaten alive in the defensive end. Anyone know what the advanced stats had to say?
Its time they finally put Bennett in a position to succeed. If he can handle his own and be a productive 2nd line player great. If not then leave him to learn on the 3rd line. |

56.2 CF% which is pretty good but 11.6% higher than the rest of the Flames team on average, which is really good.

Flames have made it past the 1st round twice in 31 years. Might be a culture problem more than a player problem. That said, if they really want to shake it up, i'd move Gio. Don't think much would come back though. It'd be interesting to see what the return is on Monahan. Mony is the leading scorer from his draft class including Mckinnon and Barkov. He might get a small fortune. His game has not really translated to the playoffs so moving him might make sense. Gaudreau in the paper today saying he wants to come back ... if true, they should keep him. He's harder to replace than Monahan imo. |

Agreed they should look at getting rid of Monahan before Gaudreau. Tkachuk can fill 1LW so Gaudreau can be the perfect 2LW/PP guy. |

Why on earth would an expansion team give up multiple 2nd rounders for a team to expose someone?? Other than that your analysis is spot on. Spending assets to get one year of Gio is absurd for the kraken |

I think Gaudreau is a big reason for Mony's success and less so the other way around. |

Sabres will take Gio and Monahan off of your hands.
First, Mittlestadt, Ristolainen. |
