MTL moves Domi to the wing today. Went with Suzuki Danault Kotkemiemi as their top 3 centers. Maybe they’d be willing to move Domi......

Does the NHL allow performance based incentives in contracts?

For example:
Strome: 3.5M guaranteed and 500k per 5 pts starting at 40pts
TDA: 3M guaranteed, 500k per 5 goals, and 500k per 10 pts

That would have paid Strome 5.5M (giving him the 60th pt) and TDA 7.0M last season

I agree that the kids need to have a shot, but Staal does not need to be moved to make this happen. In fact, it's a great hedge to have someone like Staal as the 7th guy to rotate with Miller/Hajek/(enter young gun here).

I also get your point on his play. He's not the best, but at least he gets how to play a defensive role. Is it a coincidence that ADA was his pairing all season and they struggled defensively? Another reason why it might be wise to move on from ADA...

His contract isn't an issue either given all of the ELC guys on the team.

I just think there are bigger fish to fry than ridding our roster of a career Ranger who can still be used in a limited role and is a true leader in the locker room.

Perhaps you should consider the thought that Tony D'Angelo struggled defensively BECAUSE he was with Staal?

Yes they exist. However, teams are reluctant to offer them because they mess with cap certainty.

Well technically it would be against the next years cap, and the Rangers would free and clear by then, so its not that bad of an idea.

I’m all about defenseman should be good at defense, that’s y I was so against Shattenkirk and wanted nothing to do with Barrie when he would get brought up. I didn’t think TonyD was bad defensively last year.

Deangelo's defense is really not nearly as bad as our fans seem to make it out to be.

Fox ,who everyone thinks is a defensive dynamo, had only slightly better underlying stats. I would argue he also had a better partner

By all metrics I'm pretty sure Tony was our 2nd best defenseman last year

- mdw7413

That's a good point. With his skating, Tony should be able to retrieve the puck and move it out faster than anyone on the team. They really need a d coach to help him get to the next level (defensively and in his own zone). A lot of young dmen need a few seasons to figure that out, so I'm not going to ride these guys for their deficiencies. Staal on the other hand

Also, I haven't seen it discussed a lot, but Fox and ADA played together a few times before the season got shut down and then again when they started back up. Frankly, if they're going to pay Tony, then I'd like to see them roll with Lindgren/Trouba and Fox/DeAngelo. That's a pretty solid Top 4 and they can take their time with the other prospects and add them in as they progress.

Yeah, that would be the best option. I think Fox and Lindgren are great together, but they need someone for Trouba, and if those pairings worked it would be fantastic

I think the reality is they both sucked at playing D

Idk, I just don't really have an issue with one more year of Staal in a leadership, 7th man role.

But he didnt. He was the 2nd best defensemen by the the stats. I'm not the biggest believer in advanced stats but when you add it all up, he was better than Lindgren, Staal, Trouba and Smith

That's shocking, and I stand corrected if true. But he definitely developed a stigma that he's not great at playing D...

What about Mikko Koivu as no 2 center? He is a UFA. 54% on face offs, plus he is Finnish.
- tbreinold

He trains with Kakko. Could provide some help with him and as a locker room vet. He'd have to sign cheap and play bottom 6 since he's no longer a top guy. He's lost speed which I'd worry most about but is still a good defensive center and excellent on draws as you note. I doubt it would happen but wouldn't hate it if it did.

If we're going to get a Finnish player to buddy with Kakko, I'd rather get Roope Hintz from Dallas or Kasperi Kapanen from Toronto...

Roope Hintz is a great player but I think Dallas is pretty high on him as well and wouldn't want to part with him

Hes a RW though.

What you need to consider with poolparty is if we do pursue him, in the event we do get some cap relief one way or another, whether youd have him in the lineup ahead of Buch, Kakko or Fast. I doubt he would like playing on the 4th line.

I don’t see the need for anymore wingers. Kakko Kreider Panarin Buch Lafreniere Kravtsov Chytil. That’s pretty deep on the wings

Mikku is too old and is definitely past his prime to play 2C, and I dont think Chytil is ready to play 2C. Honestly, and its no secret, Im just not sold on him being a center altogether. To me a 3C has to be strong defensively and good on faceoffs and I dont see either of these in Chytil. As of right now, I dont want him centering any of the special teams because he doesnt have the faceoff skills.

I know theres a lot of people here who want to keep everyone and give up the least amount of players possible, but at the end of the day, if were going to take the next step forward to be a cup contender we need to seriously consider moving players we may want to see a bit more of.

As far as Im concerned... Buch, Kravtsov and Chytil are not untouchable. Id rather keep Fast for the 3rd line as he is exactly the kind of guy you want on that line.

Yeah, I was a little surprised too. Granted he doesn't see the level of competition that Trouba saw, but still not bad

This is also based on the fact of me reading the advanced stats right, and there is a good probability I don't know what the (frank) I read

It’s clear the Habs need some offensive minded wingers. If they offered me Danault for Buchnevich right now, I jump on it and submit the trade. I think that’s a very good deal for both teams. We may need to add a smaller piece into it

That lets you trade Strome for whatever and not have to commit to him now, use Danault for a year and that will let Chytil try again to become a better all around center on the 3rd line, with Laf. They could be dynamite!🧨 . If he doesn’t then you have the option to resign Danault after next year is up
