Realistically, move Marner for a legit D man. Move Nylander for defensive depth. Sign or trade for a goalie.

I’d say keep Marner and move JT for the D man but that contract takes so many teams out of the mix.

I trade Nylander all day for that return, it's Jersey and that pick could be a first overall.
Prefer it was Marner though.

Team saved/fixed

1. Nylander to Nash for Ekholm and a 2nd. (Savings of 3.2 mill)

2. Kapanen to Anaheim for Manson (Could be a pick included one way or the other) (taking on 900k in salary)

3. Sign Toffoli with money from Ceci leaving (4.5 mill)

Overall, the leafs replace Nylander and kap with Toffoli’s production, which could be a wash. They get a RD and a LD for a solid 2nd pairing. All while lowering their cap hit by 2.3 mill.

1. Trade Nylander and a 2nd or 3rd round pick to Detroit, NJ or Ana for the 5, 6 or 7th overall pick this year and select Perfetti, Lundell or Raymond (or Stutzle/Holtz if available) to replace Nylander in a year or two at a lower cost for 3 years.

2. Sign Pietrangelo with the cap space cleared by trading Nylander and letting Ceci and Barrie walk.

3. Trade Kapanen and a propsect (Korshkov, Bracco or Brooks) to Anaheim for Josh Manson

Defence would then be:

Muzzin - Holl
Dermott - Manson
Extra: Sandin

Hyman-Matthews-Marner

The money could work if they resign Clifford and Spezza to reasonable deals with $14.25M cap hit leaving with Nylander/Barrie/Ceci. The forwards aren't as deep but they are far more balanced with an experienced, rugged defence that would stack up with most of the top end teams in the East.

Hire Jimmy Tanner as GM, he will declare the Leafs the best team in the league by far and winning the Stanley Cup (or playoff series) only proves you were lucky.

Let's say two moves: Johnsson, Liljegren and Bracco to NYI for Ryan Pulock and uncle Leo + wheel Nylander and the 6th to Minny for Dumba

Love the idea of signing a poor man's second pairing D. I don't think either of those teams give up Wilson or Chucky though. Those guys are the true market inefficiency. A SOB who can score
