I have a hard time wishing any of the recent ex Senators luck. I loved them all but they all refused to resign with Ottawa. They wanted out of the poisoned the locker room. The Karlsson, Hoffman feud brought it to a head as did the losing which was going to continue for years. Cudo’s to Pierre Dorian for getting a kings ransom for the malcontents. Ottawa will be a powerhouse in a few years with a relatively young team.

All that said, Pageau is special, I was there for his 4 goals against Montreal in the playoffs. I also heard from the servers at Giovanni’s restaurant that all the patrons broke into a chorus of Pageau, Pageau, Pageau when he walked into the dining room. He is a local boy who we should continue to support for his entire NHL career!

That is funny. I think he picked that up from Chris Neil...i always remember Carkner vs Boyle in the Rangers playoffs...seems like Boyle has been in the league forever.

But yeh loads of talent out there, from the hockey hot bed of Ottawa

Lehner became really underrated in my books during his time with Buffalo. He pretty well kept that team from being Detroit level bad the 3 years he was there and all that was at the peak of his battle with mental illness.

While we all speculated that last year was either a fluke or a case of trotz’ magic, his numbers this year with Chicago and Vegas say otherwise.

I can only hope that if my flames have the cap space to avoid Hall like the plague and sign Lehner instead

Well done lead article by Michael.

Can you translate playoff success from ex Senators players into a belief that if you had held the team together it could be a contender today? Seductive appeal in the basic idea.

But, our starting choice has to be yes or no. Either we are doing a rebuild or we are trying to contend and make the playoffs.

I follow all the ex Senator players and cheer for them to have playoff success. But I have no interest in unraveling a single trade. We are two years away from the Sens putting a team on the ice that may contend for a playoff position. Maybe four years away from being a theoretical Cup contender.

I am happy with where we are.

Decent article. Talent retention for Ottawa has always been terrible. Never seen a franchise have so many players leave in their prime. Had certain moves not have been made, I think this team could be very competitive right now. Not sure the development curves of all players would have worked out in terms of production/contracts/etc, but it is fun to think about.

Thinking of Zibby and Duchene as a 1-2 punch down the middle with Stone, Hoffman, Dzingle, and a young Tkachuck is fun to think about.

You can even go back further and dream about Chara being a staple on our blue line while Hossa and Spezza lead the offense for years with Hasek staring in goal.

They're now the Washington Nationals.

But it's an interesting comparison... I'd argue that no team in the MLB was more adversely impacted than the Expos by the MLB lockout in the 90's, and no team in the NHL was more adversely impacted than the Senators by the NHL lockout in 2004/05. The unnecessarily low salary cap directly resulted in the Hossa-Heatley trade, the Havlat trade, and the need to choose between Chara-Redden... all within a year of the new CBA. Despite that, if not for the Hasek injury, we'd very likely be talking about them as the 2006 Stanley Cup champions. Similarly, that Expos team was 74-40, and boasted the likes of Larry Walker, Moises Alou, Marquis Grisson, Will Cordero, Darrin Fletcher, Pedro Martinez, Ken Hill, John Wetteland... all in their prime (well, except for Pedro, but he was emerging). It's just terrible irony that the MLB/NHL trying to wrangle the runaway greed of the their respective leagues wound up directly costing a pair of small-market teams their best chance at a championship.

I believe most if not all of those players were originally brought onto the Sens by BM.

I'm not a fan of PD as General Manager, however, I really like the team he's building. The drafting has been awesome. I think Ottawa has one of the deepest prospect pools in the league.

I still think with #3 and #5 we should get Byfield and Drysdale. But I also think we should try to package something together to move up and get Rossi.

I also worry about this teams ability to sign players long term.

Even Ennis was playing in the top 6 for the oilers before getting hurt last night. He’s high under rated as a complimentary player that can play up and down the line up.

DeMelo as well playing in the top 4.

2020 NHL Draft

01. 1 team from below - WE WILL KNOW MONDAY @6PM
02. Los Angeles Kings
03. Ottawa Senators
04. Detroit Red Wings
05. Ottawa Senators
06. Anaheim Ducks
07. New Jersey Devils
08. Buffalo Sabres

Picks 09-15
Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers
1 of PIT or MTL
1 of CHI or EDM
1 of TOR or CBJ (looks like TOR)
1 of VAN or MIN (likely MIN)
1 of ARI or NSH
1 of FLA or NYI (likely FLA)

My order of who I want to win 1st overall pick:

1. Arizona - because NJ then will only have 2 1st rounders
2. Winnipeg - maybe best Canadian team from our POV
3. Minnesota - because he will stay in the west & MIN is not a threat
4. Nashville - kind of the same reason as #3
5. Flordia - they'll have BIG cap issues in 2023

So painful watching another Leaf choke.

Post game commentators were in a state of shock.

Coach is blaming players for not getting the job done.

I was having difficulty believing that the games from this week were really about legitimate playoff hockey. But the blue choke machine makes it all seem more familiar.

I want Columbus to win but then Toronto could very well get the number 1 pick.

Decent odds there could be several teams that are really too good to wind up with Laf

The NHL will love it if it gets more people to tune in, but they probably want a team like Arizona NY to win it.

Silver Lining: the Islanders pick is guaranteed to be in the first round of this year's draft, where they can hopefully combine it with one of the 2nd round picks to move up and get another high-quality asset.

I've given it a lot of thought, and I've finally come around to the idea of selecting Drysdale or maybe even Sanderson at #5.

And I believe Pierre Dorion was on Murray's scouting staff for most of those picks. He's been a scout in some form or another with Ottawa since 2007.

The following players were drafted while Dorion was scouting for us (Chief amateur scout since July 2007 - AFTER the 2007 draft):

2008 - Karlsson, Zack Smith, Borowiecki
2009 - Silfverberg, Lehner, Hoffman
2010 - Stone
2011 - Zibanejad, Pageau, Dzingel
2012 - Ceci
2013 - Lazar, Högberg
2014 - Englund (No one really worth mentioning)
2015 - Chabot, White, Chlapik, Wolanin

Since becoming GM:
2016 - L. Brown
2017 - Formenton, Batherson
2018 - Tkachuk, Bernard-Docker
2019 - Thomson, Pinto

Dude's fingerprints have been all over this team for 12+ years. The Bryan Murray/Pierre Dorion era saw some outstanding draft selections. Here's to another decade plus of great drafting!
