You haven't mentioned Kyle Wellwood tonight and that makes me sad

Casey is below him now he is the Karlos Williams, of this team

I thought you were saying Vanek produced in spite of his centers. Roy was really good. It’s not like he had Mittelstadt as his center
- sbroads24

I'll beg to differ on that point. I think Vanek and Pominville carried him. Hence the 5 year, 5 player search that followed. I think they were borderline elite and he was a good 2C

I mean good 2C, average 1C isn’t a huge difference. I think I just Vanek played with plenty of talent during his prime here.

Pominville was a legit all star, and Roy wasn’t a slouch.

Vanek was a boss. But he absolutely took games off on the regular.

Remember how he’d absolutely chew up Boston and then go missing for an entire road trip?

Not every team is going to have a McDavid, Eichel, Matthews and a few other top line centers. Roy was solid for a few years and I think you are wrong when you say Vanek and Poms carried him. Poms never carried anyone, no offense to him but he just wasn't that type of player. And Roy carried his own load those years.

If Vanek and Pominville had prime Brad Richards as their center, we'd be talking about one of the best lines of the era imo.

They searched for years to find that guy and never did. Roy wasnt that guy. He was a good 2C in my mind.

The Sabres wasted Vanek and Pominville (and miller for that matter)

You mean starting in 2012 when that lines run was over?

That line was our top line for like 5 years and did pretty well

Then they drafted Grigorenko and traded for Hodgson

"To this moment I've heard not a definite place to play yet. It's kind of still up in the air. Which is crazy this close to Opening Day. Luckily we start on the road. But yeah, that's what we're hearing. Possibility Pittsburgh or Baltimore. Worst case, Buffalo."

Things would have been a LOT different had that happened.

That playoff series vs Philly where Briere and Vanek went tit-for-tat on goals could have been all Sabres

Derek Roy had an 80+ point season and a 70 point season.

Two years better than any of the lord and savior Ryan O’Reilly’s years with the Sabres

The run was over because Roy wasnt up to the job. He never was. Vanek and Pominville were always more talented. He blew his leg out or whatever and then they moved on

I’m just going to concede before you get Fitz level stubborn on this. Especially if we’re getting to Roy wasn’t even talented

He was a good 2C in my mind. He was never a top line center. I lived the era, I watched every game. Vanek and Pominville were immensely talented and with a bona fide 1C they would have gone deep

A good 2C. I think he was a lower end 1 in their prime. Not a huge difference.

I don’t think he held anyone back. Of course Vanek would’ve been better with an elite player

Imagine if Darcy actually negotiated his contract mid season and didn’t let him get to free agency... I remember the “we don’t negotiate during the season” talk around then. Just stupid to let them both get away.

Keeping just briere would have had us contending for years. Drop Roy to 2C or Wing or TC as 3C or on the wing. That’s a dangerous offense.
