Rumor is they have no interest in bringing back any of their own UFA's except Larsson, and they don't believe he wants to return to Buffalo.

From the Calgary front office to the fans, they are tired of Monahan's one way play and lack of commitment to the defensive side of the ice. They are ready to move on, but I have no idea on the return they'd ask for.
- kingcong39

Well it would have to be another Center then
Bc all they’d be left with is Backlund

here's a guy i came across while looking for an ufa d-partner for dahlin:

jan rutta

he has played alongside hedman for almost 2/3 of his toi and the two have clicked because of rutta's ability to adapt to the way hedman plays...underlying numbers are real solid and he's in the final year of his a contract that pays him $1.3m...

yeah, the sabres would need to overpay, but he might be worth it

- Michael Pachla

72% of his TOI this current season, but did not play with him last season, plus Rutta went out on IR with an injury on February 8th.

He's played 500 minutes each of the past 2 seasons at even strength.

Can he handle top pair minutes when he is going to be turning 30 in 3 weeks with the much fewer number of minutes he has played the last 2 seasons?

Highly doubtful, and his underlying advanced stats are not great. His offensive numbers are solid, but how much of that is being carried by Hedman? His individual advanced stats would suggest a lot of it is due to Hedman carrying him, and his defensive advanced stats are mediocre.

If you want an RHD partner for Dahlin, go after Dylan DeMelo. He's logged the proper minutes the past 2 seasons, his advanced metrics are as good or better than Rutta's, especially defensively, and he's an RHD.

Who knows what they want, but they are not getting a number 1 center in return for him, that much is certain, as he had a bad season, and looked disinterested for much of it per those that watch the Flames closely.

If they lose in the play in round to Winnipeg, the likelihood of major changes increases greatly.

Smart decision if true. He'd be the only guy I would bring back from the UFA group.
If he walks, fine. Lazar can fill in and hopefully become as effective defensively. He has the speed, and Faceoff on his side already. Give him time to accelerate defensively, like Larsson did himself.

Assuming his acquisition cost in a trade is relatively high, do we want a guy who is known to slack defensively...to play along side Skinner presumptively? I like watching Monahan no doubt, and you can't deny his offensive talent, but having another defensive liability probably isn't the best idea.

It's definitely a concern. Getting an RW to play on the same line who is defensively responsible would certainly help.

That’s another thing that makes it less likely
I get what your you’re saying,
but teams don’t really like having only 1 good Center on their roster
So they’ll have to have some sort of replacement plan to even remotely consider moving him
Maybe they do? Idk

Hopefully if he stays, he can post more than his career season of 0.23 ppg.
For all the zone time that line generates, which is great, they can pot say ~0.35 ppg, or 25 -> 30sh points. Do some damage rather than merely killing time running in circles.

Gaudreau, but he has his sights firmly set on the Flyers as his next destination.

While they've soured on him (Monahan) quite a bit, based on what he would cost in terms of assets, the better plan seems to be finding 2 Centers who will drive play offensively and defensively, on a short term basis (3 years optimally) to allow Cozens etc. full time to develop and proper sheltering in terms of minutes and matchups.

It's almost a foregone conclusion at this point that Larsson wants to play elsewhere. The only way he returns is if the Sabres really overpay, and they seem set on not doing that, which is smart on their part.

How come no one questions if sam wants to resign in buffalo?

He sat out thru part of camp last time, and its been nothing but losing for him as well.

Ror, risto, eichel, larrson everyone but sam?

Cant blame him either for wanting out, but never a word about ti.

He's not a UFA yet and Botterill went through a tough negotiation last time with him.

Well then Send him to Calgary for Monahan and go get Tuch and Anderson to play RW.

Ufa vs. Rfa is different for sure.

But, ror, erod, bogo, risto and possibly eichel have been under contract.

Someone suggested a 1 year deal. Maybe that's an insult?

Hard to gage his perspective. Probably likes playing with eichel. Still lots of coaches and losing....

I'm not sure about Monahan, I like Anderson and tuch.
Hopefully casey or tage can play rw . Okposo seems like a foregone conclusion.

Seems like Colorado or Vancouver would be good spots for sam. Calgary too, maybe for johnny hockey?

Sure he probably wouldn't waive, but he would be near Philadelphia if that's the main objective. Set him up with a 2 year skinner type try out with eichel at center.

Everybody wants a 2C, either we get one that has defensive deficiency but good offensive and deal with the defense, or we get one that really isn't a real 2C or just a placeholder. Or do we just let the 6th best prospect in hockey right know take the reigns and run with it. The more you look into what's out there and what may be available, there really isn't much to go and get.
