And even if the Sens hit on half of those, it'll take 5 years at least to fix that, if they don't ruin those kids by force feeding them, ala Edm.

Somehow Ottawa's inept cheap ownership is gonna put people in place to win a championship?

Beat Tampa, Toronto, Boston in the division.
Maybe even the Sabres

Picks and prospects are wishes and dreams

Possibly. As we've all seen, having a great prospect pool w tons of draft picks doesn't mean anything unless they're utilized or flipped correctly.

As Boomer likes to say, that's why they play the games.

- Powerslave

Very true, but wish we would have kept on the right path, we would be better of today. They seem to be following a strategy and seem to be drafting very well and with 3 1st this year could really put them over the top.

Thanks, Happy 4th to you to. Don't know if we would have had Dahlin, definitely not Cozens. But what can you do, just hope they hit this year, make a few good trades and maybe are fortune's change.

Was looking over that Colorado trade for Rhino, what if Alex Newhook was added to the offer. Still probably not enough with Jost and Zadarov but would make it more interesting.

I could see Colorado being a good trade partner for sam.

Plenty of money under the cap to sign sam long term and some young players, prospects and picks available.

Jost/ or newhook , zadarov and a 2nd ???

Trying to arrive at fair trade value is complicated and fun. The problem is trying to arrive at comparables given so many moving parts in the "equation", if there is such a thing.

Sam's a relatively young, bonafide 1RW, who produces at around a 0.77 ppg rate.
He's about to get paid $7.0m-sh on a longer term deal. The purpose of trading him IMO is to secure a 2C first and foremost, while hopefully enjoying the benefit of not overpaying for him. So, I'd keep that as a requirement in a trade involving him...can the player acquired play that 2C position. Yes - good; No - find another trade partner. Also, the common rule of thumb of a roster player, solid prospect and a pick can be used for guidance as well.

Can Jost be that 2C in the future? Maybe, but he put up 4th line production, albeit in low minutes. I think it is a stretch to have confidence he can, more like 3rd line hopefully. He has decent underlying metrics. Still, I think the answer is No.

Big Z is a distraction in the deal, I'd eliminate him. Fun to watch, but better and cheaper option should exist for a 3rd pairing dman.

Kadri is a decent option as a workable 2C, and brings some nasty to the team that surely needs it.
However he is 29, 5 years older than Sam, and his production is probably around 50+ points. To me, that means I better make out well on the Prospect and Pick aspect. Newhook would be of prime interest, I agree, he would be a A prospect in my book.

So, I'd go Kadri & Newhook and the teams can figure out the draft pick(s) involved...each team may need to add a pick in different rounds to balance it.

That's how my mind works ( or not)

Pretty sure that Colorado brought kadri in to solve their 2c problem?

Sabres would be getting older right now with kadri, not sure if that's the plan

I do like kadri. Newhook is a great get.

Sam for basically jost and newhook

Jost 10th overall 2016
Newhook 16 overall in 2019

So basically ( 2) mid 1sts for sam. Seems like an overpayment if anything. Of course my opinion of sam is lesser than others.

Zadarov brings the physical play that bogo left with.
Possibly risto leaving as well?

That's the hard part, can Jost handle the 2C spot, he's got talent, plays on the #1 PP but he only gets like 14 min a night playing time. Newhook is the future here in that trade, Eichel Cozens Newhook down the middle is sweet. But then you have to fill your RW area. Do we have enough to get Tuch and Anderson or if the contract is right maybe sign Granlund.

I hear ya Boss, we do think much differently on many things, but some valid points.
But in rebuttal:

Not all 1st are alike; 16th versus 2nd-OA, currently producing as a 4th line versus producing as a 1st. Sure, there are years apart, but Jost is unfulfilled promise, while Sam is delivering.

If Jost us so promissing. And good enough to be put into 2C on Sabres...after all, that is THE primary objective of the trade; then he should be able to slide into that 2C position in Colorado...the team that drafted him.

Kadri, while older plays the physical style you love, and is better than Jost..especially the next 2 years to bridge Cozens and be a mentor for him. Jost is still trying to figure it out.

Budget comes into play with Big Z, Sabres have Miller at $3.8m...Big Z at $3.2m+ makes for a $7m 3rd pairing...about 2x what it should be. In a flat Cap era for 3 years, simply cannot have it. It limits other opportunities unnessecarily.
If you want D, then demand DeMelo to play along side Dahlin.

We agree on Newhouse, was a good find by 36. He could be a great add when Kadri leither moves on or descends to 3C territory.

I think there is plenty to get both Tuch and Anderson between Risto, Montour and Tage.
So yes.
We still have the 8th pick, so leverage it for a RW guy...there are a couple who can slide there in addition to Holtz.

They have to maximize Reinhart into 2C, not a kid at 22 puting up 4th points no matter his minutes. If Sam is traded and you don't hit on a bonafide 2C, this team took a major step backwards.
Jost is a Mitts / Tage clone in terms of production and age. Jost should be consideration for one of those 2 as trade equivalents, not Sam who out produced him 2X in his first & 2nd year, and 3X in his 3rd.
Go get Brandon Dillon for left side if you want physicality, but upgrade your D rather than spending $3.2+ on a 3rd pair.

Makes no sense to me anyway.

That's more enticing, but how are you addressing the Sabres Center deficiency right now, as it's likely Newhook needs another year of college hockey before he's ready to make a full impact at the NHL level?

Just curious if option, especially those who are all in on signing Reinhart

Which of the following goes and my projected salary

Kuhun 2.5
Oloffson 5
Lazar 1.5
Reinhart 6.5
Dahlin 8
Joker 2.5
Montour 4
Ullmark 3
Mitts 2.5
Cozens 6
Samuelsson 3
Luukko 3.5
2020 #8 ??
Am I missing anyone ?

I don't know 39, trying to pry players out of Ottawa and they really don't think very highly of Rhino, said maybe Tierney and a pick. Is Rhino even enough to entice a team for a legit 2C.

Do we have to go Henrique or someone in that category to bridge or do we decide to lay the cards on the table and go young, might not be the best option, but might be the only one worth while. Think it's gonna be a interesting decision when it comes down, and maybe not a popular one.

I am against a trade involving unproven quantity for proven quality.
So no, I would not.

The Sabres need a proven 2C, and Reinhart is the best trade chip to acquire one in a package if not straight up, depending on the quality.
I like Kadri and Newhook myself better. Kadri can play for another 4 - 5 years, but will require a new contract Fter 2. That is the biggest hang-up for me is the unknown cost if that contract.

Jost is a hope and a prayer..you want him, include Mitts in the deal.

Not really, Jost has about the same ppg as mittelstadt. He's 2 years younger than Reinhart, who at Jost's age netted 25 goals. Nothing about his on ice impact is particularly impressive except he's above team average in his defensive play.

If the swap was Casey and Jost that's one thing, but whatever first round value he once had has quickly evaporated.

Well I hope some GM will bite on Rhino and a 2C, because I have been trying to work on a deal for a 2C with other posters and the best I got was Tierney and a pick or prospect. I hope Rhino can pull some decent players, we shall see.
