And you sound like a total buffoon.

All they had to do is the following to make it fair:

Only teams seeded 8-11 in each conference, should they lose in the play-in round, will be eligible for the 2nd drawing.

If any of the teams seeded 5 through 7 lose in the play-in round, they will automatically be receiving a higher pick anyway than they would if this were a normal season.

I don't care about how this effects Buffalo. I feel worse for the Red Wings and Senators.

Or ..... stop using a lottery system. Go back to the ol' 'you finish last, you get first overall' system. The best sports league in the world (NFL) does it that way, and they're just fine. Tanking ? Who cares, let them.

🤔 Montreal is gonna take their whoopin' and go wait for lafreniere to be delivered.

That's what I think too but who the hell knows with this strangeness.

I would have no problem with the above.

Or price is gonna get hot, steal it and Lafreniere ends up in Pittsburgh... Price could easily steal that series.

Price has been a shell of himself in 2 of the past 3 seasons. He'd need a time machine to be good enough to steal that series.

That would be a reasonable fix. When I first heard of this year's lottery proposal, I thought that was how it would be. I wonder if they tried that, and the teams that wouldn't be eligible under that scenario wouldn't go along. The teams all had a vote on whether to resume play or not.

That may be true. But a rested price could still find a few games left in the tank... you know how these series are. A hot tendy and anything can happen. Price could find a few games to be that determining factor.

Due to the 1st overall being up for grabs, there could be some serious discussions that go on pending who loses in the play-in round, if that actually happens...

Here are the 8th overall guys since 2010:

2010: Alexander Burmistrov
2011: Sean Couturier
2012: Derrick Pouliot
2013: Risto!
2014: William Nylander
2015: Zach Werenski
2016: Alexander Nylander
2017: Casey Mittelstadt
2018: Adam Boqvist
2019: Philip Broberg

Ignoring the last two because it's really too early, you have 8 players with significant bodies of NHL work. I would put Risto as the fourth best player on that list, meaning he is actually a little better than the average 8th overall pick.

Realizing then that you will probably on average get someone in the Risto or worse category, how valuable is this pick anyway? I'd be a lot happier using it as the centrepiece of a package for a top line player.

I would not be the least bit butt hurt about this stupid draft scenario if these playoffs were 3 months ago when teams were still playing it the form that earned them the points they had at the stoppage. I don’t know how anyone can’t acknowledge that this is a completely different situation. Throw out the standings. These teams will be playing for the cup in the same shape/form as they usually are during preseason. Anything can happen. And teams really loaded with talent already, like Toronto, Nashville, Pittsburgh, etc should not be rewarded with the #1 pick because they lose 3 ‘preseason’ Stanley Cup playoff games. That’s all I have to say about that.

This blog showed you're not getting a quality Center by moving the 8th overall. You have to use other assets.

Accidentally flagged ya Hommie. Sorry. I wanted the clowns take. Do you package the pick? And if so, who do you target.

The problem is the NHL draft is too predictable. In the NFL you can pick first overall and get a choice between Mario Williams or Reggie Bush and neither is the best player in the draft. You can get a total bust quarterback 1st overall or a stud playmaking cornerback 23rd. There is a lot of luck. In the NHL, it's too rare that stars aren't drafted top five.

Though I think tanking at least is fun. The NHL takes itself too serious. If teams want to tank, let them. Sabres proved it doesn't mean you'll win.

Every other team also sees the above, which means the 8th overall goes from being the centerpiece to a trade package to an add on, and I'd much rather play the lottery by making the pick in hopes I can develop the pick into a top end player and look to make trades and signings with other assets then devalue the 8th overall by making it a throw in asset.

I guess that depends on the player being targeted... hertl. No pick. Cerelli. Yes pick.

It is? Let's look at 2016 for an example:

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/nhl2016e.html

The 4th and 5th overall don't look too good while the 39th overall looks like he should have been a top 5 pick.

That happens many/most years.

The lottery certainly hasn't stopped teams from tanking, anyway.

I would not trade the pick

If your changing your scouting department, and GM puppet and leaning on Ralph going forward with Kym, I feel you need to give them the pick to see what they can do.

I do not think there is a reason to get a long term second line center when you have casey, cozens and the 8th pick in 2020

I think the bigger need is to grab 2 good scoring wingers (assuming you keep reinhart), to give cozens and casey a legit chance to be a center

kahun may end up being that second line center, or could be a third line winger

tage could be a middle six winger, could be a bust

no matter what, casey and cozens both need to get 16 or more minutes a night in the nhl with 2 quality guys on their line, and one of them will probably need to move to the wing

it would not shock me if the lineup opening night is

skinner-eichel-tage
olofsson-cozens-reinhart
casey-kahun-johansson

then again they may overhaul half of the roster

You could get Hertl with the core of the deal being the 8th overall.

There's almost no chance you can get Cirelli for the 8th overall as the core of the deal.

Also, why would you want a player in Hertl with serious injury issues with only 2 years left on his deal?

every draft is different

you get a jack eichel type player once out of every 15 years

2016 draft, right now, could be one of the better top 10's in years, as long as your not stuck with the nylander in the draft
