If Toffoli chooses not to re-up in Vancouver, or if Vancouver chooses not to offer him an extension, then I'd like to see him re-sign in LA. With the salary cap likely to be stagnant this year due to lost revenues, he might be willing to take a short-term deal and forego his long-term, big-money contract until the league has a chance to rebound. 2 years at $7.8M or so. Gives the Kings a quality top-six option until Kaliyev can get a year or two of development under his belt.

I had him pegged at 6 years @ $7M. Add $500k for each year you knock off, subtract $500k for each year you add on. 7 years at $6.5M sounds about right, which is exactly what Kreider got. Interesting to see how this all plays out.

He's not though. He's actually quite underrated because his numbers are skewed due to playing for the dumpster fire that is the LA Kings. Put him on a decent team and he'll score 30g+ again.

Having had seen a lot of kings hockey Up close and personal in LA, I can say that one unmentioned detail Toffoli brings that by and large appears to be Lacking in the Sabres lineup night in and night out, year by year, is the fact that the guy CARES! He doesn’t take a shift off, is a good by example type of leader and you can pencil him in for 20 and 25 with awful teammates or 30 and 35 with better linemates. He is one of those dudes who takes it personally if the team gets embarrassed while also not being afraid to light a fire under his line now and again. Is he more loveable at 3yrs/$5aav, sure, is market likely to be 4-5 at $6.25-$6.85, also, a big yeah. But if ya don’t develop ‘em you’ve gotta pay market. Them’s the breaks.

Solid. I used to be cold on Toffoli till this year, or whatever it was, played out. We definitely need guys who give a poop, and can actually score points.

nice read

I like Tyler Toffoli but I do not want to pay a slow winger big money when he is 34 and 35

5 year 6 mil per max

probably will not be enough, but I am ok if he goes somewhere else

5/6m gets Toffoli signed but not in Buffalo sorry. 4/6m or 5/5.5m might do it. He’ll want a competitive team.

he had his second best goal season last year in a shortened season

would have had his second best point season

Get a stable starting goalie.
Add vets to settle the team from the ups & downs. A 200’ 3C for starters. Get Risto a very solid LHD defensive partner. Dahlin only needs a reliable partner to feed off him.

"The offer here should be exactly the same as the Kreider deal, 7 years, 6.5 million AAV. If a team is willing to go over that and assume that much more risk, then more power to them, but this should be the absolute ceiling in terms of dollars and years for the Sabres."

The top 3 contract projections per Evolving Hockey, based on probability:

27% - 7 years @ $6.545M per
25% - 5 years @ $6.124M per
18% - 4 years @ $5.55M per

If the season begins in January as has been suggested, he will be turning 29 in the middle of next season.

Due to that, 5 years is the max length I would go, as I agree on not wanting to pay him for his production at an age older than 33.

Hehe, ur prob right... It makes too much sense for an incompetent organization like Buffalo to spend the #2 pick overall on a center, and then actually at him at center, when they are starving for a top 6 center...

Common sense isn't so common in Buffalo apparently.

$7+m for Sam
$2.85m for Kahun
$3.5 - $4.5m for Olofsson
$2.5+m for Ullmark
$2m for Girgs
$2m for Larsson
$3m for Vesey
$2m? for Simmonds

Overall, a lot more money for the same players.
Retain Risto at relatively high price for a subpar 2nd pairing

Now add in moderately high priced talent at wing
$6.5m for Toffoli (28), Granlund (28) or Dadanov(31)

= Goodbye 2C, the absolute #1 need on the team

Appreciate the creamsicle look at UFA's to pass time, but none of that matters until they get a true 2C on this team. If they wait and limp along until Cozens is ready/IF Cozens can play 2C; then they should stay away from the UFA market altogether so as NOT to overpay for old, declining talent that become boat anchors by then.

Trades need to happen 1st to acquire the right strategic pieces, then color between the lines with a few choice UFA signings.

Don't know if that would be the best combo to put together, that skating would put people to sleep.
