Thank god we didn't ruin this kid by dragging him to be part of the Devil's poop show this season. A little time in the AHL wouldn't be bad but he's likely on the big club next year.

I disagree. The 2 time WHL D of the year winner is ready to join the big boys. Not to say there won't be any hiccups, but he really has done everything possible to prove he is ready, and he's already in his 20's. He's ridden the bus enough and deserves to be in Butchers sheltered role. Butch just needs to step up his game and log big minutes.

I do feel Bahl will need a year or two in the AHL tho, he's still quite raw and needs to learn from mistakes best made in the AHL where he can play a serious role.

No offense but he doesn't deserve anything.

IF he does well in training camp he will earn a roster spot; and the team will definitely give him a legit opportunity. If he doesn't spending time in the AHL isn't a bad thing.

The WHL is major juniors. He's playing against 16-21 year olds. He just turned 20 late last month. Kevin Bahl is literally 3 months younger then him. Butcher, btw is 25. Just saying.

This is always great to see, but he wasn't cut last year because they didn't think he could provide anything offensively. He didn't get it done defensively, and clearly wasn't ready to handle the role at the NHL level. That's a lot to ask of a 19 year old, so certainly not a big knock on him. He's got nothing left to prove at the junior level, and is probably penciled in the Devs' depth chart for next season, but I think its going to be a bit more wait and see as to how fast he acclimates to the NHL game.

Congrats to Ty Smith! Always nice to hear good promising news from one of the prospects. I still cannot believe he slid to us. If we have the 17th pick this year I hope for similar magic....

On TSN's Insider Trading Pierre Lebrun mentioned that the Devils interviewed Gallant. The only team to interview a coach during the pause

Hopefully that is indicative of our interest. He's the man for the job.

Hopefully it is indicative of Gallant's interest.

I wonder if this means Fitzy is likely to be named GM since typically ownership picks a GM and let the GM pick the Head Coach. Not that I think our ownership is beyond thinking of these things differently.

Gallant would be #1 on my list. I hope he is interested.....and totally fine with Fitz too.

I'm offended. Kidding of course. So lets look at the difference between "deserve" and "earned" regarding potential roster spots. As far as I am concerned, Severson is the only D on this squad that deserves and earned a top 4 role going into next season. Butcher and P.K. "earned" their roster spots. This is based on seasons past, certainly not what they brought to the table this season.

So no, Smith doesn't "deserve" a roster spot, as he has yet to put up an NHL point, but his outstanding record setting number have him "earning" a spot in my books. How certain are you that P.K/Mueller/Carrick/Mermis are showing more promise in ANY regard? If Mueller didn't block shots he would be fringe top 4 AHL D, and P.K. was nothing short of a 7D this season. Why would putting our top prospect, 20 years old already, in the AHL be a good idea? He has the skillset and patience already, whereas a guy like Bahl still has many question marks best suited for AHL next year. Who is the last top 4 D to develope out of our farm team???? Severson played a whopping 5 games, Butch was an NCAA signing, Vats was a trade, even Mermis is an Arizona product....... I'd sooner continue this studs development in the best league in the world. He is talented enough, and there is no shortage of roster space.

The last successful defender out of our AHL system was Adam Larsson; with the caveat that he hit the NHL first and was sent down when he started struggling. And that was primarily the result of a huge hit and injury from (ironically) PK Subban.

Larsson found his game and confidence down there and that might happen with Smith. Severson played 2 games in the AHL before making the team but I think we rushed him too.

I think you make some very good points. Our farm team hasn't turned out anything defensively. For that matter it hasn't worked out great when we've rushed people either. We just haven't developed a lot of quality defenders.
