At first I thought it was a salary dump, but now I see devils retained 50% of salary......sooo they gave the guy away for nothing.

Interestingly, that 5th can become a 4th if Buffalo makes the playoffs and Simmonds plays 10 games (per Frank Seravalli via Twitter).

Totally true. Vancouver offered a 6th. Boston offered a 7th. Edmonton offered a 29 year old prospect and Philly told us go to (frank) ourselves.

Buffalo with the best deal. Stepping up and getting it done!

Oy.

I don't understand anything about this move for either side. Does Buffalo seriously think they are making the playoffs this year? Even if this was made with the intention of auditioning him for a new contract, he's been in decline for years and has not been good at all for the Devs, how does he make sense for them long term? And for the Devils, unless this is a precursor to something bigger with Vatanen, it is basically giving him away for free. He has not played well this year, but the intangibles are there and they have punted on another few months of the young core learning from a good vet.

Buffalo fan perspective... Botterill knows his job is on the line, he made this move in hopes it would add some grit and leadership to locker room Barely gave up anything fr it. I don't think he's what we needed but I don't hate the move because it was inconsequential.

Sabres don’t need to move anyone other than one to Rochester to make room for Simmonds.

Good trade and one could say just for Laffs.

A 5th rounder for a depth guy with something to prove. Shows the team that management isn't giving up and the fans that we're trying to move past the draft capital stage of our rebuild.

Cost next to nothing, he'll be a warm body at worst and maybe a motivated shift disturber.
