I'm on board with this deal. I don't care if it's only a rental. We can't sit idle every year stock piling picks that may never even get a sniff of the NHL for years to come.

Im on board with this deal, but you should absolutely care if he is a rental or not. For a team that is doing well (better than expected), but still not a top team in the league compared to the East, paying 2nd round picks for rentals is a massive gamble and payment, you should care.

Also " we can't sit idle every year stock piling picks that may never even get a sniff of the NHL for years to come" may be the dumbest thing I read today. Using this as an excuse to deal away picks is dumb.

its just such a stupid thing to say, and its being circulated everywhere

"who cares about draft picks, they takes years to come to fruition, and the chances they even make it are so slim it doesn't matter"

its beyond stupid.

Draft picks are NHL currency, and to teams with good scouts, its gold.

Agreed, the 2nd is open to the same criticisms we gave deals like Derek Roy in the past. I do think, though, that some combination of the 2nd/Madden has to do with the Kings taking back Schaller for the remainder of the year. If VAN had the cap space to take Toffoli on their current roster, I'd wager the price would've been a later round pick or lesser-hyped prospect...

Picks are currency to be used in trades if a GM sees need & value combined. In a PO push in a wide open Pacific it makes more sense. Stockpiling picks/prospects is one thing but there comes a point in time when winning is priority.

ok now do any other team

and probably says more about the scouting department than it does about your draft logic no?

and ironically you include years where the team traded away high picks, so the likelihood that we get players who play above 100 games is automatically less than if we kept them...

The bottom line has to be that Aquateam want the playoffs this year. It’s the only thing that makes sense given the Miller and now the Toffoli deal. If he re-signs ill be happy with it, I’m pretty pissed about the second if im being honest though.

ideally you try and keep picks within the first 2 rounds (my preference anyway), but that deal doesn't get done without a 2nd round pick, no matter where Toffoli lands.

For sure. Blake was sniping for picks. I just really hope he signs. I do also prefer him to simmonds by a country mile. He’s a good age/style and should slot in the secodnline nicely given the history.

In order to keep Toffoli you’ll probably have to give up more picks or prospects to take on one or two of the bad contracts

There’s a few players who will be looking to get paid ...or at least pay raises with RFA’s

The teams that won their divisions in the previous season but did not play in the Conference Finals (potentially picks 24–27)

So if we win the Pac that’s 55th OA or later.

are you actually going to have me spell out the difference between what the two clubs have accomplished in the last decade?

I'm hoping they move those players to recoup picks, rather than sell more pieces trying to retain them

Though I agree that a 2nd round pick, and Madden could be important to our future success. I feel that playoff experience and battling to get in to those playoffs is more important right now. Players like EP, QH, BB, JV, AG, BH are our future, and Our 2nd and Madden could only hope to be as good as AG. Getting those players experience in the playoffs will help lay a foundation for the next 10 years of being competitive. Worry about who will be on the team in 5 years later. Adding Toffoli and getting BB back will give us a real shot at getting to the 2nd and MAYBE the 3rd round. That is way too valuable to our young star players. Also we have guys like Pod, Hogger, Lind, OJ, Rafferty that will be pushing for roster spots a lot sooner than Madden or this years 2nd.

I mean it is because they tanked for two generational talents though.
