Might be. But would you rather live in Chicago and coach Toews, Kane, Keith, Dach, Boqvist or live in Detroit and coach Larken, Abdelkader, Athanasiou, Green and Ericsson (if they are left after the TDL). Given two competitive offers, the Hawks are the better situation for the next 3 years.

Or work with his ex linemate to turn around a franchise that as a player had great success.. Yzerman turned around Tampa, no reason he can't Detroit. He has more talent to start with than he did taking over Vegas, except MAF in goal.

If you aren't putting a 1st in there, you aren't getting him.
- Elbows15

Elbows just a hypothetical trade: lehner strome beaudin for 2nd bryham naut/ bowers and franchouz excuse the spelling, from Colorado. Asking for too much not enough etc..

Could be. But with his track record for short stays, he may not be around long enough to see the result. His 3 year stint might match up better with the Hawks aging core and their contracts.

Also in May 2010 Yzerman took over a club that had Stamkos, St Louis, Lecavalier, Hedman. Not to diminish his contribution, but like Bowman, he inherited a pretty good nucleus. I think Y did a fine job in Tampa and will do the same in Detroit. But it is a mess in Detroit right now.

So per Capfriendly, the Hawks have $55,530,000 tied up in Toews, Kane, Saad, ADB, Smith, Carpenter, Dach, Nylander, Keith, Murphy, Maatta, Boqvist and Seeler. Eight forwards and five defensemen.

Strome, Kubalik, Caggiula, Highmore, KooKoo and Lankinen are RFAs, and Gus, CC and Lehner are UFAs.

In Shaw, DeHaan and Seabrook they have $15,325,000 in LTIR.

Assume cap goes up $1.5MM to $83MM, and all three LTIRs return to the lineup.

$83MM - 55MM = $27,470,000 - $15,375,000LTIR = $12,095,000

Subtract any bonuses, etc and figure they have $11,000,000 conservatively in space.

To sign:

two goalies
three forwards

Even if they signed Strome, Kubalik, Drake and Highmore at only current salary plus 10% minimum QO, that's $5MM from the $11MM, leaving only $6MM for both goalies.

You think Strome and Kubalik are going to accept $1.5MM deals next year?

Absent retirements of injured players, how much better can this team honestly get without shaking things up?

Maybe but, he wasn't linemates with the GM in Chicago. He may be offered more input on the type of players he would want in Detroit.

Mercy! That is a lot of youth on the second unit!!! Keith better be on his toes.

Blackhawks power play units:
1: Gustafsson, Kane, Kubalik, Toews and Saad
2: Boqvist, Keith, DeBrincat, Dach and Strome

- Chunk

Can someone explain why Gustafsson is on PP1, and Boqvist is on PP2?

Gus is likely not here next year, how about getting the rookie some PP1 reps?

Only reason would be to showcase dumb @ss as a PPQB before the trade deadline?

Make Blackhawks a playoff team
Fire Colliton and sign Laviolette. And there ya have it folks. No giant trades, no giant shakeups with goalies or the power play or or or. Just one nice simple dump. Just watch this defensive system that Colliton is running, er, that he is TRYING to run. Boq or Gus or 4K latch onto someone and follow them, and BINGO, there is a nice giant space for our opponent and our goalie must stop a quality shot. Happens all the time. I have never seen anything like this. It is truly mind boggling. Now, if beer league coach stays, trades need to be made. If Ottawa can get a 3rd rounder for DeMelo, then Gus is a STEAL for a 1st rounder. But realistically, a 2nd rounder should be easy to get. We see that Colorado had VERY high hopes of winning the West, and now have MASSIVE injuries all over the place. We want Bowen Byram, Alex Newhook, a 1st round pick. So, WHAT assets do we have to give up ?? Is Bowman gonna shock us all ?? If we are gonna do a GIANT trade, the Av's look like the partner.

Nice post by Kevin Allen in place of Ek for Hockey Buzz

“The only problem with the deadline is the math doesn’t work,” Burke said. “Mistakes will be made. There will be 14 or 15 deals, and I checked with the league again this year and they are still only going to award one Stanley Cup.”

That means there will be teams that regret giving up a piece of their future for rental players. That’s why some teams have chosen long-term deals instead of rentals. But Burke said there will be plenty of rentals before Monday’s 3 p.m. ET deadline. “You are going to see a bunch of activity,” he said.

Gus? Lehner? Crow? Maatta? Smith?

Bring in a competent coach before selling all the team assets would be my vote

This team ever since getting clubbed by Nashville hasn't been anywhere near what we have been used to even when Q was still here coaching.

Lazerus has a great article about the differing styles of CC & RL today in ‘The Athletic’.

“We’re completely different goalies,” Crawford said.

But they get the same results. Despite being one of the worst defensive teams in the league, giving up more high-danger scoring chances than everyone but the Winnipeg Jets, the Blackhawks have the ninth-best save percentage in the league at .912. Crawford and Lehner have combined for a .926 save percentage at even strength, seventh-best in the league. After a dreadful December, Crawford has posted a sparkling .926. Before that, Lehner — a Vezina finalist last season — had a .926 as well, third in the league.

With league-average goaltending, the Blackhawks would be flirting with last place in the Western Conference, not the wild-card race.

“Our goaltending’s been unbelievable all year,” Patrick Kane said. “They give us a chance every night.”

They just do it in wildly different ways.

San Jose retained 1.6M in salary which is probably why WSH included another pick.

Marco Scandello from MTL to STL for a 2020 2nd and 2021 conditional 4th. If he resigns with the Blues or if Blues win 2 playoff rounds, the condition is satisfied.

Edit Bergevin acquired Scandella for a 4th a few weeks ago and now flipped him for at least a 2nd.

I think Maatta more than Gus.

I can't think of any very valuable return for Gus - a guy had an outlier production year last season and has reverted to his mean production this season - plus has trouble playing defense.

- StLBravesFan

Maatta having two more years on his deal hurts his value.

Gus is not what these teams are looking for, they are looking for big strong defensive defensman as depth. Obviously Scandella is a Bowmeister replacement.

I think Seabs even in his current condition would fetch more than Gus

OK. Hawks are done. So, any baseball fans here?????

I am in a competitive Yahoo league, for 7-8 years now. Somewhere around $100-120 to join (can't remember exact). We lost 3 regulars this year. Looking for between 1-3 teams to run a Ten or Twelve team league. Good prize structure..top 3 get prizes, monthly small "Biggest mover" prizes. Fun, but competitive.

I only met these guys (7-8 years ago) like this. Joining on a whim. I am Canadian, they all Americans...but a good group. Run a great league.

If anybody interested, drop me a PM....I will find a way you can contact our Commish.

A couple Blackhawk fans in there I would love!!!

Carry on fellas. Hopefully a couple of you are game for a game!!!

You list 22 players. 13 forwards, 8 dmen, 1 goalie. I put it on a spreadsheet. Using your assumptions with 110% qualifying offer to Strome, Kubalik, Lankinen, Highmore, and K4 (since Caggiula is making over $1 mil they do not have to offer him any increase) the total would be $76,209,878. If the cap is $83 mil (again using your assumptions) the Hawks will have $6,790,122. My guess is they move Maatta and sign Mitchell to an entry level contract. That frees up another $3 mil+. So now the total is about $10 mil. With that you need to sign a #1 goalie and pay bonuses. You resign Crow for $4 mil. There will still be plenty of excess to sign Strome and Kubalik to larger more realistic contracts. Maybe $2.5 mil to $4 mil each for Kubalik and Strome. We can debate who gets how much. Also you can start the year with a 20 man roster to minimize the cap hit on day one. You can begin utilizing LTIR on day 2 in the likely event that one or more of Shaw, Seabs, deHaan is not ready to go (or may never be ready to go) or someone else gets injured in camp. This is one way it could work. There are probably 100 other scenarios.
