there is a reason im a couch GM and not a actual GM, but I would be looking at trading one or two of: Benn/Stecher/Tanev/Fantenburg and bringing up Rafferty + Brisebois/Sautner.

There are obviously going to be players who are walking in the summer, and I would rather get something for them than let them go for free.

No GM will reduce defensive depth when they are playoff bound. Unless Rafferty/Brisebois/Sautner show they are just as capable, it is a bad move to gamble on them. Sure our defense has had issues with shot totals, but you always go with the devil you know.

Some ppl take it for granted both Petey & Hughes are getting Matthews & Marner money. Nobody once has thought a very good bridge deal could be done. As players they know if they want to be winners the money will be there if they take that route. Yes they risk injury but that gamble will pay off huge if they ride it out.

Too early to speculate on what Hughes will get but I think Petey will be 9-10 mil, though I don't say that with a ton of confidence. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, as JB might overpay free agents, but he's set himself up pretty nicely with his RFAs, Bo and Brock both have fairly reasonable cap hits.

Comparable for Gaudette for me would be
Radek Faska. 2.2 x 3 2.93% would be close. Remained a 30 point center though. 19 in 54 this season but plays shut down for Dallas.

One year, 40 point players Kerfoot, Johansson, Kapanen took 3-4 year deals all low to mid 3's.

It's not the defence with shots totals. I'd say it has a lot more to do with forwards getting to rebounds and second chances before the other teams.

TG and his system of everyone to collapse 2 inches from the net and don't pressure anyone ever in the defensive side.

LE isn't going anywhere. Boston was able to bury Backes, Islanders were able to bury Ladd, yet everyone thinks that LE MUST be traded. We have 2 more years to deal with his cap hit, it sucks, but it is what it is. Getting rid of futures to rid yourselves of mistakes is dumb.
