Carol Schram: Jacob Markstrom leads Canucks with shutout win on Sedin celebration night
Canucks fans lauded Daniel and Henrik Sedin for everything they did as members of the Vancouver Canucks, then Jacob Markstrom shut the door with 49 saves as the Canucks earned a 3-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks to maintain their lead atop the Pacific Division.
It all played out pretty much exactly the way I expected. Team was flat Marky was not he is really starting to bring an unbelievable consistent level of play that allows the team to stay in games they don't deserve to be. I thought Travis was a bit quick to shorten the bench as I did not feel like Bailey was a liability out there in his limited ice time.
I loved Gaudette dropping the mitts with a guy who had a bit of a size advantage on him and he did well.
Thanks Carol! Sedins have brought a lot of class to this organization, the ceremony was an extension of this. HHOFers, looking forward to Lu getting his next year and for the haters to hate on him for it.
Thanks Carol! The ceremony was great — Juice being the obvious highlight, but glad to see Lou and Kes catch some love too.
Marky stole us those points, but glad he is operating at that level where we can! The team definitely needs to tighten up in front of him, but they’re getting hot at the right time to make it to the dance
And my point flew over your head. We can’t fit Marky under the cap. Minimum 5 years and $6MM per. Goodbye Marky 👋🏼 - CanuckDon
That can absolutely fit under the cap, and they will resign him. Aren't you the one who's been poopting on Demko for months now? The team finally has a solid starting goaltender who wants to play here and you want to ditch him because he's (theoretically) asking for a reasonable amount of money based on the quality of his play.
Northy, enlighten us. Show us a realistic scenario where they can afford to sign Marky for $6MM with term and still keep Hughes and Elias. I’m not a demko fan at all and that’s not my point. They have cap issues. Add a first to dump Loui and they can bring him back

The constant denial of this would drive most reasonable people to try bath salts. Apparently, simply being compliant regardless of how much money is being pissed away on retarded contracts, is all that matters.

You do realize that at the end of next year alone they have over 19 mil coming off the books right? Markstrom is currently getting paid 3.7mil. An increase of around 2 mil is not hard to fit in.

I'm not denying the Canucks have bad contracts, I'm saying a 2mil raise for their starting goaltender isn't an outrageous impossible task to accomplish

I think its going to be tougher than that though.
You have to have a big contingency for next summer, as Hughes and Petey wont come cheap, at all.
UFA's they will look to re-sign are probably:
Virtanen, Gaudette, MacEwen, Bailey (given what he has shown), Tanev, Stecher, Brisebois, Markstrom, Leivo,.
Maybe's: Fantenburg, Motte, Graovac
Gone: Schaller
that 19 million isn't very much when you should probably allow yourself, at minimum, 12 million in open space next summer to sign Quinn and Petey. (just guessing to the figure)

For sure they have work to do this summer. But how can signing the guy who's currently in the Vezina conversation not be a priority? I feel like anyone saying it's time to let him walk away is being crazy. Why would an organization spend 5 years(give or take) developing a goalie into a top 10 starter only to let him leave for nothing just as he reaches his potential?

im not saying let him walk, and im not saying trade him, im just thinking that the top priority at this point will be Hughes and Petey next summer. Whatever happens over the summer, they must be kept in mind during all negotiations with any other players. Im thinking that Markstrom DOES get re-signed to a semi reasonable cap hit, and Benning tries to sign all players to either cheap longer term contracts (Jake and Leivo come to mind for those), and a bunch of cheaper "show me" (1 year) contracts for players like MacEwen, Goldobin, Bailey, Gaudette). I dont know what he does with Stecher/Tanev.

It will be very hard with raises to virtanen, Marky, tanev etc. Plus Elias and Hughes bonuses will bring their cap figure down. They don’t have much junk coming off the books other than Schaller

If Marky got 6 of the 18 - is 12 enough to sign the RFA/UFAs?
Virtanen/Gaudette - yes
Marky, Tanev, Bailey, ZacMac, Leivo, Fanta, Motte - maybe
Stecher, Schaller, Graovac, Brisebois, - gone
Also factor in the possible increase of the cap a few mil and potential for a buyout or two, and maybe a traded contract. Which could give you 2-5mil more??
Promotion from within (ELC) could help with cap stress (Lind, Hogs, Madden, OJ, Rafferty)
When Hughes and Petey need a raise we have at least 19.5m coming off the books, plus what ever else they can do to get more cap. - Retinalz
True, Edler/Sutter/Pearson/Benn will all be gone. I think what Don is trying to say though, is that you aren't locking up a bunch of expiring contracts on cheaper 1 year deals than what they were making prior.

I wasn't pointing at you specifically. Stop being so conceited.

Amy cap increase will be wiped out by the kids bonuses
