The rental price for a veteran defenseman is being established and, right now, it’s not cheap. Really, it never is. On Sunday, the Devils traded their captain Andy Greene to the New York Islanders for a 2021 second-round pick along with 21-year-old AHL defenseman David Quenneville.
To get a sense of what the Islanders are getting in Greene, why they paid the price and what comes next in the trade market, we asked The Athletic’s NHL writers to share their thoughts:
Scott Burnside: If you are looking for character and a guy who will fit in wherever you need him in your defensive lineup, then you could hardly do better than Greene. Big fan. And the Islanders, who are all about character and fit under coach Barry Trotz and GM Lou Lamoriello, obviously know what they’re getting. But yikes, a second-round pick and a prospect for a 37-year-old defender on an expiring contract who has 11 points? Yikes. I spoke to an NHL executive recently whose team is among the many looking for defensive help and he indicated the prices being asked are exorbitant. But that is a ton to give up regardless of how good a guy Greene is, so you have to wonder what that does to the market for guys like Sami Vatanen, Brenden Dillon or Dylan DeMelo (all pending UFAs), to say nothing of defensemen with term left like Alec Martinez, Jeff Petry, Jonas Brodin or Matt Dumba. In short, open up the picks and prospects vault if you want to get better on the back end.
Craig Custance: It’s worth noting that Greene had a no-trade clause and wasn’t going to just waive it for any deal. He’s earned that right. He confirmed via text that a strong relationship with Lamoriello led to him waiving, and there’s no doubt that their time together in New Jersey is a big reason why this deal was made. He’s just about perfect for the Islanders, who needed to bolster their defense. It also helps getting a player you know exactly what to expect from when he arrives. That has value this time of year. The biggest winner here though might be San Jose. The Sharks have a rental defenseman in Dillon who a lot of teams like. There’s now one less defenseman on the market and it was a strong return to make it happen.
Pierre LeBrun: I wondered last month if Ron Hainsey might be a good fit for the Islanders because Lamoriello knew him from signing him in Toronto. Well along those lines, Lamoriello re-connected with a player he knows ever better in Greene, having brought him to New Jersey to start his NHL career back in 2005. And Greene wasn’t going to waive for just anyone. He had a full no-trade clause and was going to be picky depending on the opportunity. This means playing for Lamoriello again, which is important, and his family doesn’t even have to leave home, which is also important. I’m not sure there were that many teams the longtime Devils captain would have waived for but this one makes perfect sense. Good job by interim Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald to get a second-round pick out of it, even if it’s for 2021. That’s a decent return for a 37-year-old blueliner having a nice season but especially given that it’s not like there were many teams in the bidding because of the players’ no-trade clause. So from that perspective, Fitzgerald was limited in his options.
Dom Luszczyszyn: I actually really like the fit of Greene on the Islanders. They’re a defense-first team and they just bolstered their identity further with Greene, who still has the goods in his own end. He should boost a league-average penalty kill and provide much-needed depth to a defense corps that’s struggled without Adam Pelech. The rub is the price. A second is a lot for a player of Greene’s caliber, especially when the team has a much more pressing need on offense.
Corey Masisak: It was interesting to note the same day Travis Zajac said he did not want to waive his no-trade clause and wanted to stay with the Devils, Greene also said he wanted to stay – but also seemed to be keeping his options open. Zajac has a year left on his contract and more control over his situation, while Greene being a free agent and the Devils not having a permanent GM left him in a more precarious position. Greene remains one of the best penalty-killing defensemen in the league. His play at even strength has started strong and faded each of the past three seasons, but the Devils have also probably been playing him higher in the lineup than they should have. He could be a big plus in a supporting role and has proven he can handle a big workload if needed.
Arthur Staple: This move seems a little desperate, perhaps, but given where the Islanders are on defense, it was necessary. Having lost Pelech for the year back on Jan. 2, Trotz was rolling with five-and-a-half defensemen – rookie Noah Dobson has been averaging just over 13 minutes a night, so the burden has fallen on the other five regulars, and the wear and tear was starting to show. Greene is a lefty, stay-at-home type who can still log real minutes, especially in a Trotz system, so if this works, the team’s defense corps will feel more orderly
Who and for what. Don’t just nix or mock the deal tell us who’s available and at what cost that would have been better.

Well I really dont know who's available at what cost, so cant really elaborate on that much, but maybe here are some names that I know are available but dont know exactly what cost;
Dillon/Martinez/Scandella are a few dmen I heard, but there's more offensive guys available also

They like the player not the price but it is what it is, queneville is expendable and wilde is back next year and a second I can handle. Again they need to win now or at least get in again
Agreed, Devils need to get whatever they can for anyone on an expiring contract and Andy can absolutely still log some minutes and kill penalties. Problem is the Devils were still leaning on him like he was in his prime.

100%, he was over used by the Devils and will be a welcome addition to the Isles d Corp.

I really like this trade. It will NOT hurt our current team, we didn't give away too much, and it gives us more D that is reliable. We still have our first round pick, and parts in Bridgeport to get a forward

I really like this trade. It will NOT hurt our current team, we didn't give away too much, and it gives us more D that is reliable. We still have our first round pick, and parts in Bridgeport to get a forward - cdn_Isles_fan
I would say There is more to come. Lou’s just saying what every GM says at this time of year looking to add. It’s a subtle message to the selling GMs out there.
