Karine Hains: Where Do you Stand on the Kovalchuk Debate? 8 games into his tenure with the Canadiens, Ilya Kovalchuk keeps on turning heads. With the trade deadline just over a month away, what do you think the Canadiens should do with their newfound sniper?

It’s a wait and see what kind of gas he has in his tank when mid March rolls in. If he takes under $1M for next season then maybe keep him.

yes yes yes!!

To me, the Kovalchuk signing is just a welcome distraction in an already lost season. The very thought of giving an aging forward a contract extension based on his performance during the last 8 games just appears ludicrous

this team has been pushing this "the future is bright" narrative since the draft last summer. If the future is so bright, do you really need to sign a 36 year old instead of playing your young players?

So you keep him at the risk of losing him for nothing?

Nice to see someone agree

you are totally right on all points.
trade him for a pick in a few weeks and move on.
I was againts his signing, yes there's no risk and he'll bring a pick, but Habs will draft lower because of him. so really, where's the gain?

Flip him for a draft pick ... he's playing his heart out to get a contract next year. At 36, I'm not sure he can sustain this pace over a long period. JMO

I think I would keep him if he wanted to stay and the offers are not that good (3rd round pick). Even in a rebuild, you need some good vets to play with the kids.

One thing you said that might end this debate : I think he wants to play for a contender, one last chance at the cup.

If this is so and it should be, trade him.

Hopefully he doesn't end up in Boston.

Signing him was a good short term fix because of all the injuries our team went through.

However, looking at Kovy as a longer term measure would say a lot about what we have coming in the minors (and the state of our bad drafting over the years).

If Bergeron can’t get what he wants for him at the tdl, sign him for another year.

A kovy with third line minutes and pp time, is a much better option than the weal of cousins..

what makes you think Kovy would want to stay?
he could (and probably would) walk for nothing.

he'll end up in STL, in case their snipper (what's his name again?) doesn't come back from injury.

I could see a lot of teams after him. Like most of the contenders.

Even if he slows down a little, who cares? You don't need to put a point per game to be a good player.

I heard rumors about Boston before he came here. Kovy would be in teir top 6, me think. They have one great line.

Two weeks ago nobody wanted him, that’s probably a good reason right there..

3@ 5.5 would be a reasonable extension. Keep the guy. Goals and chemistry are hard to come by.

Tarasenko! that's his name!
yeah, not sure MB would trade him to BOS, but why not if it's the best offer they get.
