None of the 5 players listed would make a significant difference on our team. Tre should have signed Kovalchuk for starters.

Zucker and Toffoli are lesser than Kovalchuk in your opinion?

I don’t suppose you’d be interested in a Kris Russell for Backlund trade?

Kovalchuk was free (would not have required us to surrender any picks or assets) + Kovalchuk is cheap @ $700K

I think any contending gm needing a wing was silly for not going after him. 700k 2 way contract is nothing and he’s been playing good in mtl. Now those same gm’s will have to trade for him come deadline day

So he is free and cheap, neither of which would actually alter the performance of the team itself.

You stated “none of the five players listed would make a significant difference on our team”.

Yet a free Kovalchuk would?

For the price; Yes! Where are you trying to take this?

Kovalchuk would never play in Calgary. Montreal is a fun town. He may be having a little resurgence currently, but I suspect he will regress after the warm and fuzzies have subsided. I agree on Toffoli.

Do the Flames have a realistic contention run in them?

The division is wide open to make it to the conference Final but ends there. So why give up assets in the hope lightning could be found? What assets can be used? In goal is it ready for a sustained push?

Simmonds has been better then his numbers (if you believe in that sort of thing) and is a great teammate. If you have the roster spot he’s worth a add if the price is cheap.

Plays with some edge and toughness but not stupid about it. Won’t fix your offense alone but an interesting addition.

Just bringing this over from last thread.

This is a Darren Haynes tweet.

Cold #Flames:
- Bennett, 1 point (g) in last 16 gm
- Dube, 1 goal in last 15 gm
- Giordano, 1 goal in last 31 gm
- Jankowski, 1 point (a) in 38 gm
- Lucic, 2 pts (1 g, 1 a) in last 16 gm
- Mangiapane, 0 pts in last 9 gm
- Rieder, 0 pts in last 9 gm
- Tkachuk, 0 goals in last 9 gm

Yeah we suck.

Sure we have been winning games, but a lot of those were won by the goalies.

I would take him but would not want to give up much to do it.

Secondary scoring rears its ugly head.
JG also isn’t getting it done.
Does the farm have any elite prospects?

https://www.nhl.com/flames/stats

Those are not encouraging numbers.
Team is getting very stale.

I suggest no trades now & retool in the offseason.

Pretty good player but not interested in that contract.
Give the oil a call he fits perfectly in their cap!

There are some on this board that would agree. We have some decent pieces but I have not seen enough to think this team is anything different than the team that got their asses handed to them by Colorado last year.

I agree with you! I say try to trade Monahan. He aint never going to be a #1 center for us

Trade Monahan ? Dumbest thing I’ve ever heard !! #1 centres don’t grow on trees and very rarely are great right from the start !! This kid is figuring it out all he does is score goals ! Sure having a bad year but look at other #1 centres it takes time !!

Not a fan of trading top 2C’s especially without the depth in prospects.

Trade out a D & don’t be crazy wanting top value but close. Once that is done then shop JG & try for Byram.

That’s my rough ideas.

Take a breather & retool & make the sacrifice. Thus roster doesn’t inspire & sell mode wouldn’t be horrible.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to miss the PO’s & hope to pick a big piece.

Typically at the trade deadline teams over pay for top 4 D so Tree at least has to listen on Hammer and Brodie as losing them for nothing to UFA would be a Jay Feaster move.
If we cant get 1 or both extended by the deadline and someone will pay up for 1 or both I say move on.

I like Toffoli, Kase, Dillon, and potentially Blake Coleman if he's available from NJ Todd!
I think Zucker is too expensive, but Toffoli would probably be the same price if re-signed.

Pageau is another name to consider for Calgary, at least as a rental? No to Simmonds! He's just a waste of a roster spot, like Lucic.

Ok but what are you looking to accomplish?
Giving up what assets for what real gain?

Too many years have passed to believe this group has a future imo. Gotta let go & make significant changes. Idk what managements plan is or if Tree is the guy to stick around. Also idk if a good GM is out there to change the teams direction. The division isn’t scary but teams are improving. The 3 Cali teams are in the dumper & you don’t want to join them.
