Doesn't mean much IMO, but Ian Mitchell one of four nominated for Hobey Baker Award as best collegiate player.

How much better is Koekkoek than Gilbert (at this point in their careers)? This much, from Powers in ‘The Athletic’.

3. One of the reasons for the Blackhawks’ recent success is the third defensive pairing of Maatta and Koekkoek, which has helped stabilize the lineup. The third pairing, especially when Dennis Gilbert and Maatta were together, had been a weakness.

Over their last five games together, Maatta and Gilbert were on the ice for 31 shot attempts for and 58 against for a 34.83 Corsi percentage, 19 shots on goal for and 30 against and four goals for and two goals against.

Since Koekkoek replaced Gilbert in the lineup, the Maatta-Koekkoek pairing has been on the ice for 64 shot attempts for and 36 against for a 64.0 Corsi percentage, 29 shots on goal for and 24 against and four goals for and one against.

I was thinking of guys like Drew Leblanc or Jimmy Vesey when I wrote that. Winning the award doesn't mean you'll be a great NHL player. But on the flip side Cale Makar, Jack Eichel and Johnny Gaudreau have won it. Hope Mitchell falls in the latter group.

Yes, partially torn Achilles what did the Rocket in, when surgeons and athlete rehab weren't around...It would be an inpatient move by Vegas, but they need a puck carrying attacker.

And teams can ASK for Krebs, that doesn't mean they are trading him...but look at their past actions, they have traded SO many of those drafted players to be so good right away.

I just don't understand why the coach's success going to the Cup Final does him in so soon after with a Cup final and a third year team...

- wiz1901

I think this part is GREATLY missed among fans. People s#!t on Eklund and other's who report guys being available or teams being interested because it sounds stupid or they'll never trade player X or player Y or whatever...there's a difference between being interested and someone being available. You're not doing your job if you don't ask who's available and/or ask for the best prospects you can get back. Teams can be interested in someone without a deal likely to happen. I.E. Boston wants Brandon Saad...Hawks say they want their 1st Rd pick, 3rd Rd pick, Urho Vaakanainen, Trent Frederic, and John Moore...Bostons says thanks but no thanks and periodically checks back to see if the price changes.

How many shifts does Hagel get before we determine his NHL chances?

I may give him 3.

It's hit or miss with guys. That's why people say it's a BIG jump to make from College to the pros. The guys who've done it and been success have for a reason: they're elite. The guys who haven't either weren't good enough or had their egos too pumped up to think they would need time in the AHL and their careers suffered because of it. Hopefully Mitchell falls towards the former rather than the latter. We'll see though.

Coo Coo has been playing well and is a far better/faster skater than Gilbert (in fact, he's likely the fastest D man we have). Hopefully he remains in the lineup. I like him challenging the play at our blue line instead of backing in on our net. That's as much as reason why the Maata/Coo Coo pairing also has better numbers.

As for face-punching.
Well, you might want to talk to the Islander fans about that.
Trotz put Johnston in the lineup for them (a face puncher with 'some' ability to play).
Beat the crap out of some guy and instead of it energizing the Isles, seems it energized the other team.

Sound familiar?
I'm all for physical play (and in fact, I think Coo Coo is plenty physical when he's on the ice) but the face puncher aspect? Not so much.

How ya doin' Mo?

Hi, Savvy, good to hear from you. I'm okay, looks like winter is going to make an appearance in Chicago.

I agree with your whole post. All of it.

That's very interesting those stats. I liked Gilbert's play as well as his toughness which Chicago has been lacking for some time.

Imo Gilbert being in his first season in the nhl you can expect some mistakes. I still think Gilbert with more time will become a solid player

You need at least 6D to dress a night. The kid is young and from what we have seen, there is a a lot to be encouraged about. Keep in mind, this is the same board that mangled Johnny Oduya for years and the guy was an intricate piece in winning 2 cups.

If gilbert is our 5D or 6D in a couple years, we have done well in developing our defensive pipeline. If he is playing 3D minutes, YES, we are in trouble.
