If I’m not mistaken, they did win a cup after these contracts were signed, but I could be wrong.

Asking price for Alec Martinez is a second and a prospect, that probably sets the defense market for the TDL.

Didn't know that. Backstrom still with 270K to 450K more per year in his pocket.

$9M+ for Backstrom in Washington.
- mohel

Backstrom's deal takes him through his age 37 season. Oshie is at $5.75M through age 38.
- mohel

that's uhh...an very bold move for Washington to make. I guess they've made their decision and Holtby will be a FA at the end of the year and Ilya Samsonov will be the guy going forward. I thought this would be the move they would make, but wow those are some high stakes for a team that's already pretty cap strapped.

National TV contracts in the US and Canada expire after next year, the 20-21 season.

Pundits are expecting ESPN, Fox Sports and NBC to be in on the bidding for the US markets. The package could be split among different providers ala the NFLwith a large increase in the rights fees.

This will probably result in a big jump in the cap. Who knows how much. I bet GMs are counting on this when they are signing players. All they have to do is navigate next season's cap before the TV contracts kick in.

Edit - Canadian TV contract runs through 25-26 season

Not represented by Brisson. If you look at his top clients, except for amybe McKinnon, his clients do not receive home town discounts

Toronto Maple Leafs logo John Tavares $11,000,000 $77,000,000 (2018)
Chicago Blackhawks logo Patrick Kane $10,500,000 $84,000,000 (2015)
Chicago Blackhawks logo Jonathan Toews $10,500,000 $84,000,000 (2015)
Los Angeles Kings logo Anze Kopitar $10,000,000 $80,000,000 (2016)
Pittsburgh Penguins logo Sidney Crosby $8,700,000 $104,400,000 (2013)
Philadelphia Flyers logo Claude Giroux $8,275,000 $66,200,000 (2014)
Nashville Predators logo Matt Duchene $8,000,000 $56,000,000 (2019)
Anaheim Ducks logo Cam Fowler $6,500,000 $52,000,000 (2018)
Colorado Avalanche logo Nathan MacKinnon $6,300,000 $44,100,000 (2016)
Colorado Avalanche logo Erik Johnson $6,000,000 $42,000,000 (2016)
Buffalo Sabres logo Kyle Okposo $6,000,000 $42,000,000 (2016)

MacKinnon took what was considered a fair and good deal for him at the time he signed it in 2016 at which point he was around a 60 points a year kinda player. The next year he took his game to the next level and has continued to do so the past two years which turned it into the major discount it has.

Now he's said he's willing to take a discount with his next contract as well to help this team continue to be able to compete. I think this is a direct result of seeing what's happened to teams like the Hawks, Kings, hell even the Sharks now where guys wanted to get paid and did and now the team has struggled to put enough talent around those guys for them to win.

As far as the Kane and Toews contracts, when those deals were signed they were considered to be GREAT deals for the players and the team based on their level of play to that point AND, most importantly, where the cap was projected to go moving forward. Kane has been worth every penny of that contract. Toews has been slightly disappointing, but only because with the talent around him being lesser than it was before the spotlight has been put on him more than ever. He had a career year last year, and the two years prior he was pretty much on point with what his career averages have been minus his goals being down. Have the injuries caught up to him some? Has the speed of the league caught up to him as well? Both of these are probably spot on but let's not act like he went from a 80+ points per year average to a 50+ point range.

God I hope we see a good jump in the salary cap. The NHLPA has been pushing for guys to make bigger and bigger salaries while the cap has remained stagnant. Then you add on the fact of these contracts like Hossa, Bolland, Horton, Clarkson, Zetterberg, Franzen, Kesler, Callahan, Gaborik, etc. that have been out of the game for YEARS but don't want to retire and lose their money and now the teams are stuck with their cap hits and the contracts are moved around. It's a joke.

How bout a package that brings Martinez and Toffoli to the Hawks. What would that take? I like Toffoli. Kid plays hard, has a 200 foot game and can score.

Powers over at the Athletic speculating on Lehner's next contract. Says teams won't offer a top tier contract of 9.5M to 11M for a goalie this off season. Says Lehner may be askng for 7-8M, but league sources says he is worth 6-7M.

Good point, Boiler. A word of caution, though....estimates of cap increases seem to be exaggerated by the league.

Salaries are a percentage of league revenues. If the pie gets bigger, the salaries get bigger to match. After a short adjustment time, the situation will remain as it is now, just with bigger salaries.

Both are UFA's, Kings are trying to rebuild on the fly like the Hawks, they want picks and prospects, which is what the Hawks want to keep and receive in contracts that they move, so I do not think the Hawks are a good partner for a trade.

The article I read says the annual TV revenue may rise from the existing 200M to 350-400M per year. So of the 350-400M in revenue, players get a half or 175-200M. Divided by 32 teams equals 5.5M to 6.25M more in cap?

No. Toffoli will be a UFA next season at 28. He will be overpaid by someone. Better not be the Hawks. Martinez- same thing a year later, but he will be 34.

Those are exactly the guys the Hawks DON'T need.

If the league revenues go up $200M, the owners get half and half goes to the cap. $100M ÷ 32 = $3.125M per team cap increase.

Not even half a Seabrook deal.

Depends if they keep escrow in the new collective bargaining agreement. Looks like the first quarter was 14.5%, so the real salary cap is 14.5% less (the amount the players actually get paid so that the salary/owners % of revenue is 50/50). Could you imagine if the actual salary cap was $70 million, which is effectively what the players are being paid out?

I don't think the TV contracts will move the cap much ,owners will gobble up most of that between them . Price of oil and the Canadian dollar will have a bigger effect on the cap from what I understand .And the Dollar ain't going nowhere fast .

Curious as to why you said this? Being that Q couldn't get this team into the playoffs, what do Trotz or Tortorella bring to the table that our previous and current coach do not?
- Chunk

Q would have this group in the playoffs too.

Mainly because they both play a boring trappy game that would suit the slow defenders better then the idiocy JC implements. And both can get big point totals out of skilled players while doing that.

Combine a tight D scheme with the outstanding goalies and Patrick Kane doing his thing they win way more close games.

He hasn't fixed Florida's defense. The reason the Panthers are in contention for a playoff/wildcard spot is they are outscoring their opponents (Huberdeau having a career year, 61 points in 45 games).
