Tyler Cameron: Hawks lose to Flames, lose Strome
Dylan Strome went down mid-way through this game and did not return.
The Hawks are running out of lives. Who replaces Strome? There isn't much left in Rockford with guys like Sikura, Quenneville, and Highmore already in the lineup with the big club.
Here are a couple of thoughts on that + other things: |

I’m betting the Strome injury looked worse than it was and he’s out days vs weeks. Also, Gus can kick rocks anytime now. Crazy how far that guy has fallen in a short time. Smith and Gus for any return at all would be great. Let Wedin, Entwistle, and Carlsson come up to see what they have. |

When asked how Eddie Curry could improve his rebounding, Scott Skiles replied: “Jump!”
When asked how the Hawks can improve their power play, I reply: “Move!”
It would be nice to move with a purpose - have some kind of plan of where all 5 should move to - but in any case, stop just standing there waiting for Kane to make a pass across the ice through sticks galore, or the skater at the blue line waiting for opponents to fall down to create a lane....Kane to AdB isn’t working anymore because the other guys know it’s the first, second, and third option.
Rotate skaters in and out of the front of the net - jeez, get someone TO the net - rotate low and high, stop running everything thru Kane.
Do something other than hoping that a shot magically opens. |

Be honest with the legacy guys and say its a dev year. Unload Maatta and Gus and start playing more piggies on the blue line and cheers to another lottery pick.
Maybe playoffs next year but the target to go all in should be the year after that when crap gets shuffled around after the Seattle expansion. |

What's the deal with Nylander? Sits a few games, then comes out like that?
Does he not care, or maybe he's too worried about making mistakes? |

Agree with Gus having worn out his welcome. Keith gave up his usual goal a game. Toews played out of his mind last night, anyone crazy enough to not understand his value to this team need only watch the full replay of the game. Crow was stellar. Killing off not one but 2 5 on 3 situations (and extended ones at that) should get u the win. PP was horrid. Kane slept thru the game and was responsible for the first goal on a poor outlet pass.
ADB continues to have the yips with his stickhandling. |

Like the rest of the team, I thought he was good in the first - and invisible after. |

Is it the legacy guys who need the honesty, or Hawk fans? Will casual fans show up in a developmental year? Will die hard fans cry after every loss like they do here? The reason this is not already a gut rehab is because of the fans more than the legacy guys. |

Hello, Sage. I hope it is more a matter of needing to settle in and adjust than an "I don't care" thing. |

Re: Powerplay
I think it's great they run it through Kaner, but somehow I am giving Boqvist the puck with the emphasis he should, on possession, see if he can bust a seam forward and take a shot instead continuing the merry-go-round that seems to always be back to Kaner, because it seems like the opposition has little to diagnose, and it just becomes Kane's quick play after the puck arrives with a 50/50 that they play him correctly.
That make sense? |

Maybe both. Have read a few times that some of the vets would be salty if the team was playing well and on the cusp of a playoff bid, and Stan stood pat.
Idk that they deserve to be part of the talks but some honesty about what the team’s plans are may be a deciding factor for some. Kind of doubt it though. Other than Crow, I think the other 4 Core guys will be here til the end of their deals.
I’d be surprised if they weren’t. I also don’t think Bowman will do anything that jeapordizes the future in terms of trading awaypicks or any prospects of consequence.
As much as I’d like to see them remain in a playoff spot, I’d also like to see them get something for Gus, Crow and Maatta. I think that’s reasonable for them but for me, having my cake and eating it too.
If they could find a taker for Smith where they got nothing more than a pick, that’d be great but could see him being bought out at the end of the year. |

I am far from an expert, but they are trying to build his awareness and hockey IQ that isn't involved in the attack.
He has to learn lots, and you know what?, he may have the flu, is worn down or still thinking as opposed to the more instinct ways he can generate and finish... |

Boqvist is definitely starting to look more confident with the puck. The kid has all the tools to be a star offensively; tremendous skater, great passer, and a quick release from the point. Actually watching him defensively last night, yes he occasionally looks a little lost, but I like his gap control and he seems to lead with his stick and makes it hard for the opposition to make a pass. Think the kid is getting better with each game. Right now, watching he and Dach and the way they progress is the only thing really keeping my true interest. |

Sounds reasonable. And sounds better than him being an entitled kid who doesn't have the drive. |

The excuses for Nylander are starting to run out. He is what he is just not a good NHL player. I didn’t mind the trade you have to take a chance sometimes and as you can see we have no one in the minors that can help us now. |

I worry about his hockey IQ. Like when he pulled up at the blue line on a two on one. |

Yeah, the work ethic isn't there. He hasn't played with any fire all year and instead of being motivated and ready to play last night he is going through the motions. If he ends up being a health bomb every night, might as well nail Bowman's coffin closed. |

I am praying Ian Mitchell signs the dotted line as soon as Denver wraps up their season. |

The Hawks are not going to intentionally tank, but with the injuries it is almost inevitable that they miss the playoffs. I am ok with that. Still can put the 2nd half of this year to good use. Especially for Dach, Boqvist, Nylander, and Sikura. Give them top 6 minutes / top pairing minutes.
They are so thin at forward they need to load up the top two lines. Having Kane play on the 3rd line is basically ridiculous now. Top 6 should be Toews, Kane, Kubalik, ADB, Dach and then either Nylander or Sikura (until Saad and/or Strome return).
Keep a physical 4th line Carp, Smith, Q.
That leaves Kampf, Highmore, and either Sikura or Nylander on the 3rd line.
Colliton's system seems less like a chinese fire drill this year than last year at this time. Has he changed his system that much or have the players adjusted to his system?
After last year we were begging for better goaltending and PK. We have made strides in those areas.

I agree. Nylander looks hesitant out there. I believe he will get to a point where he gains some confidence and lets his instincts take over. I am not ready to give up on him. Keep throwing him out there for 11 minutes a game. I would play him with Toews and Kubalik, They are really starting to click together. |
