Lmao good luck. He’s a terrible GM. Get ready for “kicked some tires” and the “prices were too high”. |

Good blog. The time to add is now! I have a major Chris Kreider hard on. I think he would look great on this team.
To Edmonton: Chris Kreider
To New York: Chiasson + Puljujarvi/ Yamamoto + 2020 2nd that becomes a 1st if he resigns.
Do it Holland! |

The reason the Oilers have a small window of opportunity here is because Chiarelli had that attitude of building through the draft. |

The mindset of building through the draft is absolutely the right path. However, there are limits to how much you can sacrifice the maximizing of success in the present in the pursuit of this hypothetical future. My fear is that Holland is showing a lot of the same verbal cues as Chiarelli did in how he talks about this.
It was phrased well on another site: Holland has effectively put himself in a no-lose position by saying "I want more time to see what we've got". Either the team keeps winning at a decent rate and he can say "looks like I was right not to mess with the chemistry" or, if they start dropping, he can say "see? We weren't ready and I was right to not spend too much of our future".
Almost these exact phrases were uttered by Petus, as well and are evidence of a kind of mindset that I can't stand in managers at what is the highest level of the sport. Confirmation bias and an abdication of the responsibility for success in every avenue. These people are supposed to be the best of the possible best, but the hockey world has insulated them from their failures for WAY too long- especially in Edmonton. |

It's nonsensical to try and make moves for immediate gains now, especially moves that would put them straight back in cap hell that they're so close to escaping from. As long as RNH is willing to resign, everyone who matters is going to be locked up for a while. McDavid and Draisaitl are still going to be superstars next year, and the year after, and the year after...
You're right, the NHL playoffs are a crapshoot. But that works both ways. The Oilers could go all in this year, only to get swept. Why not play the long game and set the team up to be fighting for the division title for the next five or six years, especially when they've already gone through the rough patches.
The Flames tried to skip a step and take advantage of their window by giving Neal way too much money, and now they're pretty much boned because of that and will continue to be just short of an elite team. |

The thing is, there's grey area between "making a move" and "going all-in". I agree that what Sean proposed here in sending a bunch of youth out for two pending UFAs is an unwise choice for the future. I can appreciate the reasoning behind the desire to do so, but I'm not in favour of it myself.
However, a couple smaller additions of players on expiring RFA deals who are still under team control beyond this year is an entirely reasonable aim. It balances the present and the future quite well. Let's say the option to add Josh Anderson (for Puljujarvi and Jones) and Chris Tierney and Tyler Ennis (for Gagner, a cond. 2nd and Marody) was out there at a reasonable cost. Fills two major holes on the roster and doesn't leave the team limited in the future.
McDavid- Drai- Kassian
Neal/Ennis- Nuge- Anderson
Khaira- Tierney- Haas/Chia
Nygard- Sheahan- Russell
That's a roster whose even strength scoring issue has been minimized, the blueline still in tact with some depth and all of our top prospects but Jones still in the system. |

They are very far from elite. They’re not even in a playoff spot. How’s Lucic’s toughness working out for you? Still think you won that trade? |

Lines at practice.....I actually don’t mind these lines and Drai could probably give Nuge a boost to get him going......I guess the idea will be to play Jones with Klefbom when he arrives.....a possible showcase move maybe? |

Nor do I. Appears to achieve a sort of balance. |

Lucic has been great, and the Flames definitely won the trade. Lucic isn't the problem he just takes up too much cap space, and that all goes back to the garbage contract they threw at Neal. Lucic deserves to be in the lineup every night, Neal did not. If the Flames were spending that 5 million on a player who was worth 5 million, they'd be an elite team. |

Not an Oilers fan but I do think that Holland should make some small additions that don't break the prospect bank but improve the lineup in a few areas.
Think that a guy like Namestnikov who's a UFA and has produced a bit in the past in Tampa could help on the 2nd line and could likely be picked up for a 3rd round pick at most and maybe a low end prospect.
Tierney would be a good 3C and is an RFA so would be resigned therefore not throwing away assets for a rental, the Oilers have a lot of good D prospects and some solid D that aren't going anywhere for awhile like Klefbom and Nurse and with Bouchard and Bear plus Broberg set to be major parts of the future guys like Caleb Jones and Samorukov could be dangled as trade bait, those kind of prospects should only be traded for an RFA though, not a rental.
I understand the want to go after the big prize at the TDL but Edmonton isn't really in the position to be blowing valuable assets for rentals yet so imo two or three good depth moves would be best and Holland should be doing this sooner then later.

Imagine Colorado's roster after they acquire Hall
Landy- Mack- Rant
Hall- Kadri- Donskoi
Bura- Jost- Compher
Nieto- Belle- Calvert
That's a damn competitive forward corps if Jost can get back up to pace. That or Boston's.
Marchand- Berg- Pasta
Hall- Krejci- Heinen
Debrusk- Coyle- Bjork
Kuraly- Wagner- Backes(?) |
