Did I see a smile on Koivu's face after that winning SO goal? And it looked like he was almost knocked over on the bench after the game was done, with all the congratulatory shoves he was getting.

Always been a Koivu fan, still am... I didn't agree with his last extension (dollar amount), but as you said Dan, he's been a trooper through the years and one could argue he earned it... it's really unfortunate that they could never put enough complimentary players around him while he was in his prime... I still believe he can play a large role on this or any other sqaud as although his speed has greatly diminished, his skill and will have not.

I'm hoping BG can talk him into a reasonable extension. Maybe a 2 year deal worth around 4 - 5 million. Not sure if he'd accept that, but I think fans could live with that.

I've always been a fan of Koivu's as well...but I would rather see him just retire after this year. I don't really think the Wild can give him an honest chance for a Cup in the next 2-3 years and (selfishly) I don't want to see him win one with another team. I would think that monies used to resign him now would be better used on youth.

Wooo hoooo! Another win for the Wild, now they are on the border of making the playoffs like every other year, and pucking up their chances at a decent draft pick. It's like masturbation, feels great for the moment but left with shame in the end. Tards

Absolutely, given Koivu won't be winning a cup with Minny in all likelihood there just really isn't much that can be done as they need to focus on getting younger. I think you offer him below market(maybe $2-3 mil for a couple of seasons) and allow him the chance to retire in a Wild sweater. This way Minny is offering the chance to finish his career at a bit of a "hometown" discount and he is also free to explore if that is his prerogative. I wouldn't love seeing him win a cup with another team, but I would hate dropping another multi-year $5mil+ AAV just so he can retire with the wild.

Some teams get discounted players because of cup chances or players wanting to return to a "home" in the later years and there is no way Minny should pay extra or even market.

TB, this is a great post! I keep thinking how much this must be driving you crazy as the Wild keep getting points and moving up in the standings. All we can hope is that this run does not convince BG that the Wild are actually a good playoff team and that he is just happy that his players are starting to become better trade assets.
