1. Blame the old guy
2. Blame yourself
3. Leave steps one and two for your replacement

Really though, leafs have more skill on the ice than on the scoresheet. They made aggressive moves sure, but it’s more the game has passed Babcock by.

I don't think Babcock was ever the right guy for Toronto. He had great success with Detroit not only because he had great HOF caliber players like Zetterberg, Datsyuk, and Lidstrom, but mostly because the players were very capable in their own end. The same can't really be said about the Toronto rosters he has coached, in particular, the young star players. When I thought about the success that Babcock had, it wasn't the cup winning team he coached or the rosters with Datsyuk and Zetterberg in their prime. It was years following after Lidstrom retired when people kept expecting the playoff streak to end and he kept getting the team to the playoffs.

But Leafs core is very young and you are comparing them to guys in their primes. Wings great players did not look that good at 22. Hell, Marner, Matthews are owning Datsyuk at the same age and are easily much better.

Babcocks issue isn't Leafs defense abilitities at all, it's actually to do with offensive abilities. He never once put out the best lineup or let them play the way tthey are built.

I think you'll see amuch better defensive Leafs team just by letting them play their game. They will have puck possession much more.

-Nylander sits half of last season for money. Instead of trading him for defensive help, the Leafs give Nylander 6 million undeserved money.

-Leafs than after trade Kadri for Tyson Barry. Seems like a nice deal because the Leafs always needed help on the blue line. Now I would rip Barry for not showing up, the real problem is signing Jason Spezza as Kadri’s replacement. Terrible signing, especially because Spezza has been irrelevant for along time.

-Leafs Play Freddy Anderson like he’s Martin Brodeur. Not because he’s that good but because he has no back up. So the Leafs force their own hand in net.

Babcock isn’t the problem. The problem is the fans are blinded by the shinny new toys, they don’t realize there is no depth in Toronto. Management has always been bad, which is the real problem. The leafs are lucky Austin Matthews fell into their big fat luck laps.

“Boohoo, I hate my coach”. News flash, most of us hate our bosses.

Couldn't agree more.
My question is why did they wait. The off season should have been the time to make that move.
I'm not saying Babs isn't a Hall worthy coach however look at the teams he won with.
I could have coached those Olympic teams to Gold.
He only managed one Cup with that dynasty in Detroit.
I don't think his style of coaching was in any way suited to the team Dubas built.
