Normally it’s a better strategy to lock up your core first, absolutely.......but when your idiot GM spends 50% of your cap on 4 one dimensional forwards and ignores the fact that he only has one NHL dman beyond this year and pretty much zero depth up front, it pretty much means your team is (frank)ed. And you don’t even have good prospects to fill those holes

except that sens are rebuilding and were picked to be historically bad (and are actually much better than most thought).........the leafs are supposed to be the best team assembled in the cap era, and they aren't even a fringe playoff team at this point.
