Thank you Sean for your wonderful words that are representative of how I feel as a Canadian.

National Pride is just as dumb as cheering for one hockey team, voting for one political party, serving one god, drinking the same beer or buying all your clothes from the same brand when you didnt do anything besides crawl out of your mom's vagina on a particular patch of land. That being said, some people have made actual sacrifices for their country. While I believe that to be foolish, I applaud someone who believes something so vehemently that they will die for it.

I don't think I agree with that first statement- specifically the national pride issue (not the rest necessarily). National pride certainly has it's unhealthy and extreme manifestations and no one should take selfish pride in or credit for the actions of others who came before them. However, I don't think there's anything wrong with taking pride in an ideal upon which a land was founded and that which tries to bind it together.

Some manner of unifying ethic that scaffolds our every day life is a big part how societies of this size are built and maintain themselves.

I guess we would have to define what National Pride is. To me, it's simply a way to divide and feel superior. I take it to mean that me and my posse flying this flag is somehow superior to you and your posse flying that flag. We sing this song. It's better than your song, etc...

And let's be real, societies maintain themselves by fear, not some form of ideological kinship.
