New to hockey? New to deadline trades?

Oh Leaf fans

When was the last time you saw a goaltender traded for that? Please provide some evidence.

"Many probably are saying Lehner, who was a Vezina finalist last year, has been a disappointment in Chicago...."

said nobody.

He wants to play for Chicago and the Hawks are going to resign him.

The last time I saw a goaltender dealt at the deadline for a 1st was 5 years ago in Ryan Miller and even he didn’t get a ++

Yeah and Halak went back the other way

The closest thing I can think of off the top of my head is VAN trading Schneider to NJ for the 9th overall and a) wasn't at the deadline b) was a first round pick and nothing more and c) Schneider was young, heralded, and absolutely not a rental under any circumstances

In all likelihood, and that was pretty much the plan when they signed him 7/1.

I'm confused. Yesterday the Hawks were picked as one of the non-playoff teams most likely to climb back and join the playoff dance.

Many scoffed at that hot take.

So less than 24 hours later...

"The Hawks have struggled"
"The Hawks are just terrible defensively"
"the Hawks are not looking like a playoff team at this point"

Cool!

he is on a 1 year deal on a bad team. probably gonna get moved at some point.

Which is why he will be resigned. FA options are Crawford, Lehner, Holtby, Markstrom, Anderson, Howard or Greiss and this is assuming none of these guys re-sign. Nothing spectacular is out there to risk a bidding war for.

yep.

He turned down the similar money (and longer term) with Carolina to go platoon with Crawford, so I'm guessing ending up in Chicago was motivated by a desire to be there after the Isles lowballed him.

So, why in the bloody hell would Chicago want to trade the goalie, Lehner, with the much better numbers than the other, Crawford? Is their management that stupid??

Sign him.

If he doesn't want to sign, move him for a big haul. At least a 1st ++.

If he wants to stay in Chicago, but would entertain a trade, move him then sign him on July 1st.

Lehner has been an absolute MONSTER

Without him we’d be losing our games 10-0 instead of 3 or 4-0.

Easily one of the best goalies in the league.

Don't get too negative. Hawks have one of the best chances to climb back into the playoffs!

Chicago would want to deal him if he does not intend to come back. The better goalie is going to get a better return. Chicago isnt likely to make the playoffs, they are going to rebuild. If they cant sign him the best option is to trade him for something to help them in the future. Their Core is getting old. Keith and Seabrook are old. Toews and Kane got 4-6 years left on average before they decline. Trading Crawford is impossible.

1) they wont get jack for him
2) Who wants an old poorly performing goalie?

Jesus. If his save % is that high and his GAA is that good on a bad team then who would be saying he was a disappointment 🤦🏻‍♂️

Signing Lehner for more than one year would have been insulting to Crawford. With only one year to Lehner they could tell Crawford he is insurance and he is in competition with Lehner for the #1 goalie next year. It allows the Hawks and Crawford to save face. Maybe the Hawks already have a wink wink agreement with Lehner on a new contract with an extended term.

The Hawks probably will start Crawford in 30% to 40% of the games, hope he plays well or at least has a hot stretch and then if they are out of playoff contention they move him as a rental to a team at the trade deadline that has goalie issues for a mid round draft pick or B+ level prospect. I think he would waive he nmc/ntc for the opportunity to play for a playoff contender that might resign him for another year.

Ironically I remember Snow offered the Islanders pick at 15 plus something else for Schneider and Vancouver took the Jersey package instead. Worked out great for the Isles because they took Pulock at 15.

Worked out better for the canucks who took Bo Horvat and now wears the C in Vancouver.

Carrier, Stewart, Halak, 1st, and a 3rd for Miller and Ott

That was a massive trade
