No but 62 points we can argue is 2nd line player production though no ? Perhaps low end 1st line ?

I’m still waiting to see a list of players that scored 35 + goals last year that finished with under 80 points, never mind the 63 points Skinner finished with.

The Sabres are playing

- Swedish_Jesus

And I don’t care because his ELITE, ELITE Level EV goal scoring offsets his slightly below average play making two fold.

How did I deliberately read the stats wrong? I left a few out that didn't fit my narrative, sure, but so does literally everyone who tries to use the stats. xGF% and CF% Rel aren't bedrock stats? Risto was also on the ice for more scoring chances for than against.

Bottomline is Risto was far from a nightmare tonight. Dahlin had one of the worst games for a D-man this year if you look at the stats, but he was solid tonight. The stats and actual play don't even come close to matching up. People that think 10 games means (frank)-all are the ones appealing to authority, hard.

K, how about 422 games?

Eichel needs to shoot. Reinhart needs to do anything in general.

For all of the Olofsson fans calling for Botts’ head last year for not calling him up it’s pretty evident why he let him marinate in the minors. Apart from sitting on the right wall on the PP and teeing off he’s been useless.

Stats. Small sample size. Analytics. Power play points. Secondary assists.
To hell with all the reasons to be upset with this team. I’m very excited to go to the game Thursday night.

I will be in MSG also Thursday- should be fun- debating whether or not to wear a Sabres jersey

xGF% is not an individual game stat.

Look man, I don't know what to tell you. You're working really hard all the time to essentially say that stats don't mean anything. All I can say is that ship has sailed and left you behind. All 30 teams have an analytics department in house or contract it out to a private company. The entire game has completely changed in the last decade. Kids are learning to play the game differently at the lowest levels. No one will teach you to just flip the puck out of your zone anymore, possession and possession stats are everything.

You're fighting a war that's already been lost. Players who can't put up good possession stats are being driven out of the league. The only other sport that this can be compared to is baseball. Ten years ago there were GM's and commentators like you shouting about how OPS and OBP were dumb and a fad, and didn't tell you if a guy was a 'ball player's or not. Now watch a game, it's not even the same sport it was just a decade ago, and those people are gone.

Stuff changes man. When I was a kid if you couldn't win fights you couldn't win games. It was just known. Sabres haven't had a fight all season now. Sports evolve, and statistics are here to stay.

That's not what I'm saying in the least. I'm saying the vast majority of people misapply them, or don't know what they mean.

Comparing baseball analytics to hockey is absurd. The difference in events per game is astronomical. When it comes to hockey analytics we don't know what we don't know. The game is too fluid and luck based to boil it down to a few stats. We can try and account for luck, but it's almost impossible, if we could it wouldn't be luck, it would be skill.

Weren't you just talking about new coaching earlier? One guy doesn't make a team bad. And one man doesn't make a team good, no matter how good or bad that individual is.

See, now teams generally get in trouble for paying players money for past performance.

It’s the next 8 years I’m worried about not the past 4. Like I said, I’ll gladly eat my humble pie if he continues this pace and earns the contract over the course of the next 8 years. I don’t know how it’s possible to take an L after 10 games though.

- Swedish_Jesus

You're young, which means you're lacking in perspective, whether you realize it or not, so I'd like to ask a question: do you think you might be so consumed with being right with your opinions that you're missing out on the fun of the team playing well and winning?

Logan Couture did a nice job of lighting up his teammates in the post game last night.

10 games in, so we can start to see the trends
a few takes

1. Jack is turning into the hype, took over the game and put the team and city on his shoulders and delivered

2. Olofsson is going to make a case for the calder

3. casey and johansson are both on pace for 56 points

4. the addition of miller and joker really allows this to be more of an upbeat north/south team

5. hutton was not as good as his ungodly numbers before last night, ullmark is not as bad as his numbers, they will make a very good 1-2 punch in net

6. f the leafs

To add to Homie's post: the biggest dfference from last years 10 game streak to the start of this season is it seems like the team doesn't need the goaltender to play out of his mind to win, with last night as evidence.

If that continues, they will be a playoff team.

I know there are a lot of cord cutters in here so I thought that I would post this. I am selling my long-range antenna because it didn't work well with a very long cable run. In a normal situation it has no problems pulling in more than 50 stations (including Toronto stations). Even if you are a cable or sat subscriber (I have directv) the picture over the antenna is MUCH better than your provider can give you. The directv receive will also allow you to record OTA signals.

I like that Jack mentioned that he heard the fans letting him know he needs to shoot more, and that he wants to change his mentality. He will always look for the pretty play, but the message of traffic, and pucks to the net should help him take the shot. Hopefully anyway.

People consistently bring him up. The team could go 80-1-1 this year but it wouldn’t change the fact I think he’s going to fall on his face by year 5 of that deal.

I hope we win the cup by then and it won’t matter.

Sure, but if you swapped out Skinner’s $9M with let’s say Haula, Burakovsky, and Dzingel is there a drop off ? With the way Eichel, Mojo, Mitts, Hutton/Ullmark and the defence group playing the way it is me thinks not.
- Swedish_Jesus

In overall play, yes, there is a dropoff.
