While I agree that they're clearly going to regress, this line strikes me as odd and inconsistent:
They are also still a mess when Connor McDavid is not on the ice. Even riding these unsustainable percentages, the team’s goal differential is negative without him. That’s a bad sign.

Considering their entire bottom-6 has yet to be on for a 5-on-5 goal for, the other end of the percentages will also likely skew up to account for some of the difference. Further, while the possession numbers haven't looked strong, their xGF number stands above 50% despite that. Perusing the heatmaps of the first few games, you can see what the eye tells in that Tippett has the team doing much better limiting chances in the slot.

The team is a bubble team at their full-season best.

Oilers over 135 combined PP and PK efficiency. Crazy high.

TBL led the league at around 113 last year. Year before the Bruins led at around 107.

Regression in specials teams will contribute to the Oilers regression imho.

I'm afraid Tanner might be right on this one.

I see the Oilers and Buffalo regressing a bit, while most likely making the playoffs.

I fail to see how the Ducks can make the playoffs with that roster.

One thing about the Ducks is that every year there is a team that gets just absolutely bonkers goaltending and outperforms their roster by sixty miles. The Islanders were last year's team, and they had a couple of randos in net. John Gibson is - to many people - the best goalie in the NHL, so a Ducks resurgence is (while still highly unlikely) still more probable than it was last year for the Islanders.

What you don’t like a roster filled with 1st and 2nd round picks that the Ducks ice ???

Hilarious how Cordell is so desperate to poop on the Oilers that he has to create a new premise for a hot stove with the sole purpose of venting his Oil related frustration.

This wouldn’t have anything to do with the Neal/Lucic trade would it? Oh and Todd Cordell trying to spin it so hard in the Flames favour by pretending Lucic is some kind of defensive dynamo.

Keep up the salty comedy, it’s not old yet.

Lmao wow Todd you really are sad. Had to trash as hard as you could on a 5-0 team while you had the chance hey? Flames are a joke this year just like you. Enjoy Lucic and all those intangibles he brings. Shout out to Cam Talbot last night on not breaking tradition and getting scored on his first shot against.

@Leichs

Just because you dont like the guy and dont want to hear it doesnt mean it isnt any less true. Oilers are not as good as they are playing. The team cant maintain this throuout the season.

I expect Edmonton, Anaheim, Buffalo Rangers and Winnipeg to regress over the course of the season.

have the Oilers even played a good team yet? they have played one team that made the playoffs last season (Isles) and they lost their starting goalie

Oilers have a super easy October schedule...we will learn more next month

@WarAmps,

Of course it’s true. The hilarious aspect is that Todd has to go out of his way to create a new premise for the hot stove just so he can dump on the Oil because he is bitter about being embarrassingly wrong about Lucic and that trade.

Next week on the hot stove, which player is most likely to regress... James Neal! Oh and after that we should have a hot stove on which team in the league has wasted the most first overall picks in the last decade...

Todd’s motivation for choosing this topic couldn’t be more transparent.

James, we are friends now. I gained a deep respect for you ever since I found out you predicted the Blues to win the cup with goaltending as a key factor.

Maybe he knows what Dallas Eakins does with 1st round picks. Hopefully his effects are only on first overall picks, then the Ducks should be fine.

Here, let me try.

James, you recently picked Edmonton to play Toronto for the cup, but here you say they certainly 'won't win the west'. Have you changed your mind or are you just making stuff up? Something, Something, Bill Meltzer.

How's that?
