So....we're NOT burning it all to the ground?

I'll come back next week and double check.

Pens in good shape as the kids have come to play although an interesting take on Marino. He gets higher marks elsewhere. Jarry can play as well. Gotta like what I saw this weekend.

Marino is fine with his assignment. He is very strong at denying zone entries and continues win 50-50 boards with regularity. Keep playing him and let the rest of the game come to him. He has plenty of NHL talent to work through the smaller issues. I'm dead serious about playing him with Riikola next game too. I want to see a pairing with good skating ability and aggressive play get a shot against a really strong offensive team. Trial by fire time.

Very subtle, but it was at Marino's expense.

I agree with you. My eye test shows me a smart d-man doing quick plays and being physical when needed. He’s doing fine for a rookie!

He doesn’t have to go through waivers and playing huge minutes in the AHL might be more beneficial than bottom pairing ones with two of the worst NHL defenseman over the last decade

Well that was pretty harsh lol

If you are an athletic member, Gentile and Marshall have both done video breakdown of his play and it is far superior than what this blog is saying. Also, 50 minutes into a rookie season is not worth quoting in terms of stats.

Those numbers certainly don’t line up with the eye test for either player IMO.

ZAR has his first standout game points wise and we were still dumping on him most of the game.

Marino makes a lot of subtle plays to retain possession and buy time until he can outlet. Jesse Marshall has been documenting his gap control and entry denials. He reminds me of Simon with the puck. He doesn’t Rush and try’s to make smart plays.

That was by far Guddy’s worst outing. He was awful last night.

He is doing well for a rookie and if the Pens had a stronger partner for him and there was a bigger focus on team defense I’d say let him develop at this level, however this is not the case.

I think it will do him more harm than good. I of course would rather them move JJ and upgrade the LD position.

Could it be that Marino was shackled by carrying Guds on that pairing and thus the poor Corsi rating?

In my mind, you HAVE to consider who is on the ice with the player when looking at their Corsi rating.

It was a great team win. The Pens need all the points they can get. Dwell on the positives, not the negatives.

At least we are not fans of LA Kings ... they have to cover up banners like this:

And this would also require giving GMJR credit for getting Marino for basically nothing, and that just won’t fly here.

Wait wait wait...are you trying to tell me that the other players on the ice can impact a player's shot attempt differential rating?

Crazy talk, BURN HIM!

Can we also point out that regardless anyone’s thoughts on Guds that last night is an unfair time to assess?

He was terrible last night and it was clearly because he was playing the left side. Again, whatever your view of him is, last night was way worse than his normal since joining the Pens.

Hey RW, I've NEVER taken even one second of Sid's career for granted.

Speak for yourself.

In a way I'm glad for the early season injuries... easy to say with the outcome of the games so far... but we obviously wouldn't know of Lafferty/Marino's, etc, capabilities without the live game ice time they're all enjoying.

F the CF... the eye test looks good so far... they're playing as a team. Even Letang.

GO PENS!

Yes, we can. He was set up to fail. Or the Pens were asked for a demonstration of 44 on the wrong side for an unnamed GM.

Yah, he isn't an agile skater to begin with, so playing him on his offside was a really poor decision. I think if you want to do that pairing again you play Marino at LD, given his much better skating ability. His best traits are something that can be utilized on his offside too (attacking zone entries, winning board battles, and making quick outlet passes)
