Havent been a fan of Smith this camp/preseason, including the prospect tournament. He hasnt looked as confident or nearly as good as he did last year and i just dont see a world where fits on the opening night roster over Vats, PK, Butcher, Severson, Greene, or Carrick. I dont want to see him sitting in the press box either.

Yeah but Carrick’s D has been spotty. And I like Connor.

Smith was looking to move that puck behind the net when Cory decided to prove he’s really his old self. poop happens.

For the ‘b’ squad these guys are looking alright. poop total is ugly but they’ve been short a lot.

He's going to make a lot of GMs look stupid for not trading for him. Cost the Devils peanuts practically.

I'm not even talking about the play that led to the goal. Both preseason games so far and in the prospect tournament games he's had some really bad turnovers and has looked weak in the corners and in puck battles, rarely coming out with the puck in the 50/50 battles. If he keeps playing like he is i don't see a world he makes the opening night roster, he's not going to be handed a spot and as of right now he's not earning it. Still a ton of camp to go, but he looked better last year. If he doesnt make the opening night roster, idk if keeping him as the 7th/8th D will be good for his continued development.

Also, is Al Trautwig okay? Looks really shaky

Can’t argue with that.

Al looks old ad bad but sounds fine. Hope he’s fine. Even Joe doesn’t look young anymore.

The first guy or the second.

Ya smith has been really bad since rookie camp. But the talent is there so maybe he needs more time. I would give him the 6th spot. Our D isnt that bad where we cant cover for his mistakes. This is hoping he'll eventually turn it around. We were banking on him, if he dont pan out we screwed.

He hasn't been REALLY bad. And we're not screwed, at least not this year. I'm confident in Carrick.. but.. that's kind of it

Give Smith the camp and see how he does.

He's going to get camp plus 9 games at least. Also, sending him back to juniors isn't good for anybody because he won't develop more there. He needs to play in the NHL.

He looks like a legit NHLer for sure. He didn’t stand out over like Nico or Goose who are filthy at times but seemed consistently like he belongs on the team. Maltsev(?) had some great plays and a goal and McLeod had the wheels going but neither looks quite as ready. Although both got me excited about our depth.

Considering a lot of this was ‘B’ Squad I thought they played very well. Too much PK time but I think the Rangers were gifted a few power plays.

The team labored a bit with the Rangers pushing in the third but Hayden was defensively solid blocking shots and making it hard on the Rangers when they pulled the goalie in particular. I was not excited we acquired him but he was very good defensively and not nuts like Gabriel.

I also thought Rooney was good. Depth player but smart and consistent.

When I mean bad, I think I mean he shows no signs of life. No signs of the next Neids, or Defenceman of the year with 70 pts. Like the other dude said, it all started in rookie camp and hasnt gotten better. I wonder if he might be injured.

I know it's only preseason and split squad, but there have been periods where we have been outshot by a large margin

If Byfuglien does retire, I wonder if the Devils can make a deal for Laine. Winnipeg might be desperate for a right-handed defenseman.

I don't think the Devils need Laine (right now), but it would be interesting. I'll assume Winnipeg will ask for Severson, but maybe the Devils can convince them to take Vatanen and their choice of Bratt, Boqvist, McLeod, or Zacha. Maybe throw in Wood, Andeson, or Bastian also. The possibility for 3 NHL quality players for 1 player seems a lot, but I think it's better than giving a bunch of 1st-round draft picks.

The Devils have a lot of interchangeable parts in their roster. Trade Zacha, McLeod can take his spot. Trade Bratt, Boqvist can probably slot in the top-6 and definitely top-9. Anderson and Bastian are probably slotted for bottom-6 in the near future.

Let's say the Devils trade Bratt, Wood, and Bastian for Laine (and this is a steal). Actually, I'll throw a 4th player, Zacha. AGAIN, I highly doubt this happens but let's play make-believe:

The line-up could be:

Hall-Hischier-Palmieri
Gusev-Hughes-Laine
Boqvist-Zajac-Simmonds
Coleman-McLeod-Rooney/Hayden
(Alternatively, the Devils can throw Coleman at center and have Rooney/Hayden-Coleman-Anderson)

Currently, the Devils have about $6 mil in cap space, and I'm going to guess it's going to take a $6.5 mil bridge deal to get Laine signed. Once they trade Zacha and Vatanen, that's about $7 mil to sign Laine (and still have the $6 mil in cap space).

The defense will still look weak, but that's also a current issue:

Butcher-Subban
Greene-Severson
Mueller-Smith/Carrick

If it's Severson being traded, then Vatanen is getting an extension from the Devils.

The Devils can carry 2 forwards and 1 defenseman instead of the planned 2 defensemen and 1 forward.

This isn't happening but it would be nice.

Honestly, Winnipeg should try to trade Laine to Edmonton for RNH and a top defenseman prospect in the Edmonton system.

Laine is brutal. I would not want him unless he was on a two year bridge deal. Drags his line-mates numbers WAY down. At best, he is a 40 goal, 18 assist (4 being primary) kind of player and nobody will want to play with him. He was one of 2 players on the entire roster in the negatives, and amassed a whopping -24 on a team that only gave him offensive zone starts and pp time. YIKES!!!!! I would happily target Raslovic in exchange for Vats. I think the deal would help both team immediately. Ras is shaping up to be a 2RW and his top assets are speed and vision. Those tend to be good qualities.
