Those were good shots, but Talbot looked totally beat on those ones over the glove. Poor first impression. Dube looks fantastic.

Didn’t see the game in Calgary just the one in Victoria. I thought the Quinne, Dube, Phillips line looked dangerous every shift. Not going to be long before we see Phillips called up, guy was flying all night. Maybe just the adrenaline of being back in Victoria but he’s also had 2 good games vs Oiler rookies. Stockton should have a solid team.

Ok, Talbot was Talbot. But... no comment on Lucic's performance?

Lucic looked okay, even good at times. Rinaldo impressed.

Lucic was worse than Rinaldo or Smith-Pelly, but Lucic already has a guaranteed roster spot and the other two are trying to get anyone to notice them.

Jon Gillies has been a solid goalie in the AHL for four seasons but hasn't had many opportunities in the NHL. With the Flames looking for long-term consistency at the position, the 25-year-old has positioned himself as a solid option if Rittich or Talbot falter.

Whoever Adam Kimelman is, he has no clue about the Flames at all. Gilles has been anything but a solid goalie and was straight-up awful last year. Gilles has positioned himself to not even get a qualifying offer after this year unless he takes a huge step forward.

I watched the Flames at home.

Something not mentioned is that Monahan had a few great chances that he failed to convert, including in OT. Gio, too, late in the game.

They let their foot off the pedal for the third. That, combined with the soft goals from Talbot, let the Canucks into the game. If Cam doesn't watch out, management will dump him into Stockton and have Zagydulin backing up Rittich. Z is quietly becoming the next great goaltending find and supplanting Gillies and Parsons on the goaltending depth chart.

Lucic, while looking positionally sound and creating some scoring opportunities, also seemed a full step behind his line mates. If he's going to have a positive impact on this team, then he needs to increase his level of conditioning.

I loosely followed the game in BC as well, although the website wasn't consistently posting updates.

I know it's preseason. The one takeaway I was left with after both games is that the Flames need to work on their ability to play a full 60 minutes and finish their scoring opportunities. Simple, meticulous attention to detail. With that, they could have won both games and could be a legitimate contender.

Talbot definitely looked pretty bad in the 3rd, but I'm not too concerned about it one pre-season game in.

Overall, both Flames' squads dominated play for the most part and should have won both. Definitely some area of improvements to be made but that is what the pre-season is for.

Nothing to be panicking about quite yet. Lots of time to work on the stuff we need to work on.

Yep. They can't wait for the season to get under way to demonstrate they have what it takes to win. Players letting off the gas and just going with the flow is what sunk them in the playoffs against the Avs. Competitiveness is either instinctive or it's non-existent. Players don't magically acquire the urge to do whatever it takes to win.

Nice to see that Cam Talbot got booed off the ice in his first game for the Flames. The guy's glass ego will respond well, I'm sure.

Goaltending at the NHL level is like 90% confidence. Really, the only thing that matters at all in the preseason for the entire team is that your goaltenders don't have nights like Talbot had.

Last year, Smith played like poop in preseason and was the best player on the team in playoffs. You probably will not agree, but I only care about playoffs.

That's my point exactly. It took Smith until February to sort things out.

Talbot's getting cut long before February if he plays like Smith did to start the year.

Peters has shown that he's putting the best lineup out when the season begins, if that doesn't include Talbot so be it.

This exactly. If Talbot continues to poop the bed he won't be on the opening night roster so one bad pre-season game is a non-issue no matter how you look at it.

I know this fan base loves to throw it's players under the bus as soon as possible, but Christ guys it was the first preseason game and Talbot didn't even come in until halfway through. Give him a bit of a longer leash than that.

It's not a non-issue. They can't just not pay him 2.75 million.

It's also a guy who was bad two years ago, even worse last year, and mocked relentlessly for letting in bad goals every game. Anyone else and it's not a big deal. It's a disastrous, potentially fatal, start for Talbot.

That's also BS. There's a 99% chance that Lucic will be in the lineup and there no way to argue he's even close to being a part of the best lineup anywhere.

Major difference with Lucic is Peters can't send him down. NMC.

He’s going to give Looch a chance before any drastic moves are made. Same goes for Talbot, Treliving will not have it any other way. Can’t make the gm look bad. He stuck with Smith all year and it took til the playoffs were almost over before he benched Neal. I can’t see him going through that again unless he’s getting it from up above.

Also not sure where this Lucic hate is coming from? Weren’t you the one that suggested he’d play on the top line? You change your opinion on here like most people change their gonch. Flip flop around we go.
