Both the top four in the West and the top four in the East would be given a bye from competing in this play-in tournament but would play games against each other before the playoffs begin.

In the Eastern Conference, the opening round will play out like this:

• 5. Pittsburgh vs. 12. Montreal (winner plays four seed)
• 6. Carolina vs. 11. Rangers (winner plays three seed)
• 7. Islanders vs. 10. Florida (winner plays two seed)
• 8. Toronto vs. 9. Columbus (winner plays one seed)

And the Western Conference opening round will play out like this:

• 5. Edmonton vs. 12. Chicago (winner plays four seed)
• 6. Nashville vs. 11. Arizona (winner plays three seed)
• 7. Vancouver vs. 10. Minnesota (winner plays two seed)

Dont understand why they wouldnt reseed after the first round...I guess Bruins getting a bye is good and would end up with Torinto or CBJ...even tho they would have more points than potentially the 10/11 or 12 seed if they pulled an upset...

Too many teams imo in that format, but whatever it takes to include a sh!tty MTL team. 2 bye teams, 3-10 play off with a one game decider on who gets in between NYR and FLA. Nobody could have a legit gripe about being left out unfairly with 10.

I'm not a fan of the format but I want them to play. There has been other shortened seasons that dont have asterisks beside them and I'm not sure why this one would; they have played more games this year than in other shortened seasons too.

Bruins are in first place and the core may only have 1-2 years left...would be wasted opportunity to cancel this year IMO..Let's go!

top four teams in each conference will take part in a round robin.

The other 8 teams (5 vs 12, 6 vs 11, 7 vs 10 8 vs 9) will begin a five game series for chance to advance to the Round of 16.

Reseeding or bracket in 2nd round still to be decided.Players want seeding and owners want bracket. So basically, Bruins have to play to retain top spot and given no automatic point cushion. And then if win may not play lowest seed. So basically having a stellar season so far and being #1 in the league doesn't have much benefit.

Reseeding in 2nd round has to happen....stupid otherwise...I'm surprised they dont get a point cushion in the top 4...maybe they do, but havent seen it....
