I think he's the best candidate to rebound, personally. 3rd pair, PK, limited minutes. I really think Housley did a number on him. And if he still sucks, Pilut will be ready before Halloween

Scandella is a place-holder at LD until Pilut comes back. I imagine Botts is trying to unload Scandella as I type this. And with Joker sitting there ready to pounce, there really is no need for Scandella on this team anymore.

people tend to forget how much pilut struggled in the latter part of his nhl season and into the playoffs for the amerks after teams figured him out...

has great promise but has a ways to go

pilut's gonna need time to ramp up and methinks that will be in Rochester, a place where he struggled last year when sent down

There is a slim chance that Scandella bounces back in his first 20 games and then becomes tradeable. Very unlikely though and if that happens it will be thanks to Krueger.

The metrics on him are horrible. I understand that for sure. But he was coming from a 3rd pairing role with the wild, to suddenly 1st pairing with Risto (where he looked ok for a minute in 2017-18 before it became clear he was in over his head), and he was playing a terrible man defense scheme. I think his confidence was destroyed and the d zone was a mess.

Now that he's firmly back in a 3rd pair role, I really think there's a decent chance he looks ok. Or he's terrible again. Who knows

Well, we have a good problem on our hands. Depth at defense

I hate to say it but the depth Scandella adds to the left side of the D where we currently stand as the season approaches is imperative. Even after Bogo is cleared to play it will take some time before he will be in the lineup every night. With Bogo healthy he become a 7-8 guy. I think the Sabres carry 8 D for the season with Scandella and Nelson as the 7-8 to start. Joker and Pilut will start in Richester but will get their shot to prove they should be on the big squad as soon as injuries start to happen, which is inevitable. My opinion, of course, doesn't stand if Risto is gone.

A Miller/Scandella pair, with proper minutes and matchups, can be solid depth.

yup, some real nice depth and another year of development for joker, pilut and Borgen...which isn't a bad thing as their time will come.

It's going to be a really annoying year from a national media perspective if Joker is in the minors and Nylander is tearing it up with P. Kane

I'm really excited for Borgen. I hope he ends up on this team. Him and Pekar can add the grit that this team needs (maybe in 20/21).

I agree. Don't force these guys. Get them some playing time this year but use the last year UFA's to their full extent so we can either get something at the deadline for them, or if we manage to get ourselves into a playoff spot, we can re-assess then.

I think Krueger is gonna be a good coach for the Sabres. He seems like a guy that a team will get behind and give all effort for.

As am I.
I question where Borgen fits on this D though. A great spot for him would be next to Dahlin...but can't do that for a few seasons I would guess of ever.
RhD is going to be quite interesting.

Not directed at you...
But seems like a lot of the Dmen on this roster now need to sheltered/protected.
I'm looking forward to the day when we have 6 guys that they can play without having to find the perfect spot in a game for them to play.
