I'm an 8th grade teacher, and when I talk to my students today about what happened 18 years ago, I have to remind myself that they were only 4 years old. It's crazy how fast time has passed. It's all still so vivid in all of our memories.

This is one of the few recounts of the day that I can actually stomach. Maybe because over the years we have been able to get to know Jan as a person through his writing. So thank you Jan. It took courage to write that and it takes courage to post it every year for us to keep things in perspective.

Please Jan, no apologies. This is your blog and this entry is very moving. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I remember that day vividly, but for me it was sitting on my couch, on the phone with my brother while we both watched the coverage. My memories are of shock and sadness, but in a way so removed from the actual events that stories like yours serve as a reminder of just how important a day this is, even 18 years later.

Peace, love and happiness to your family and all others affected by this tragic event.

As Tony said Jan, this is your blog and I honestly would appreciate it if you retold this story every year. The farther we get away, especially now that people are 18 without ever living with the towers, we need to pass down these stories. That lives were lost and that we banded together. It didn't matter who you were everyone was your friend and we helped each other. I'm not pro military by any means but I remember being 16 and wanting to enlist and help out. I never did but truly support all my friends who have gone on to fight for our country.

This song will always make my body chill every time I hear it:

I was in the city on 9/11. My dad was still alive and teaching a class at NYU Dental School. A lecture on injection technique. So we drove in early from NJ and was at my old job at 16th Street when the first plane hit. I watched down 5th Ave seconds after the 2nd plane hit.

We had friends who died and to this day I can never get over how people posted "missing person" flyers. And I just remember feeling so confused because I kept thinking they aren't missing. They're dead.

In the Union Square Station they eventually put up stickers with the names of all the dead and last time I was there they remained although they were fading out.

I look at that and the world today and I just sometimes wonder how everything got so crazy.

I went to opening night for the Rangers with a buddy. You guys know about that. At times when life is at it's hardest we always have the game to escape to just a little.

RIP to all the victims and God Bless America. Because at the end of the day it doesn't matter if you are a Ranger fan, Devil fan or whatever. It's a luxury.
At the end of the day, Unite We Stand.

Jan,

I never realized it from your previous recounts, but we worked in the same building. My story is similar, but being from Jersey I was able to grab a ferry and head home right away. That ferry ride was the worst 12 minutes of my life.

Thanks for sharing again. Today is always a tough day and talking about it in this way helps.

As somber as this day can be around the city, we must never lose our levity.

Thanks Jan for this blog.

I'm not from NY. I was living in Shreveport, LA at the time and walking into a college class when Air Force One landed at Barksdale AFB with full fighter escort.

I was listening to CDs in the car on my way to class and didn't even know anything had happened until I got to school and the lot was empty. I walked in and there were only 2 people in a class that normally had 70.

My oldest child was born in 2003. I took her to NYC with me a few years ago and did my best (since I am not a native New Yorker) to explain it to her.

If they are 8th graders they aren't even 18 yet. Hence their joke.

Edit: Totally not trying to be a Richard, I actually didn't get Denali's joke for a minute because I stayed up too late and it wasn't processing.

Lol....I actually had to explain to another teacher why it was 18yr anniv. and not 19, so I read it that way.

All good

Are you in Fantasy or not?

We also need another person, I think I took too long to respond to the one guy and he hasn't gotten back to me. We sit with 9 teams right now.

Jimmy, get your bro to confirm or if he doesn't want to I can boot him and we become compliant again.
