Peter, please stop calling Laine a "generational goal scorer". Generational goal scorers don't go 64 games plus in a season not registering a goal.

The only reason you should call Pionk the “main” piece in the Trouba deal is if you think he will have a larger NHL impact than Heinola.
I feel Heinola was the “main” piece in that return.

I think the Jets will announce Connor and Laine on the same day, even though the risk is very low, signing either one first may open the door to an offer sheet for the other so just avoid that risk all together and sign both at the same time.

I see your point but how many players over the last ten years have scored more goals than Laine in there first three years? There are many reasons why not just PETE and Rexy call him that, 95% of hockey reporters do as well.

Okay let’s call the first round pick the main piece- did not know the player until later.

I think it's very possible that if the Rangers had kept 20th overall they would have taken Heinola.

They did ultimately take a LHD with their first pick in the 2nd round (Robertson) and they may have liked the idea of taking another Finn in 1st round along with Kakko and may have played that up a bit.

If he wants to be all mingey about it, we can call him a generational shooter and very, very good goal scorer.

Until he drops 50+ next year with an NHL centre

I can also agree to this, I just read Murat’s Latest on the Athletic and like when he wrote, at 21 Laine already has 110 goals and 184 points. At 21 Blake Wheeler was still in college. People who think he is what he is already must also have assumed Wheeler would have just been a teacher or something.

Laine has scored 110 goals before he was 21 without a center he has chemistry with. However in order to be called generational he has to score 40+ per season for 5 more years. He is just too good to trade at this time.

I'd probably get a Jason Botteril tatoo if that happened. And I'm not a huge Botteril fan. So...that probably tells you what the Jets would think of it.

Lets hope Montreal/Ottawa offer sheets the kid and the Jets get 4 consecutive years with potential lottery picks.

Only in wildest dreams. Then you trade two of those 1st rounders for a decent young RH d-man, and keep the other two picks.

Should be easy to do as Patrik could probably score 163 goals, on a bad year, if he had Sidney playing centre - and Sidney put the puck right on his stick. (and be a -29)

Sounds better than $10 mil to me! (or $8 mill)

We should keep reminding the world that he is a generational scorer/shooting talent... it helps his trade value

As for the culture we want in the room as per the article - I would take hard work, driven, focused every time rather than whimsical talent. A no compromise culture of hard work and focus is what will bring other talent closer to it's potential and honestly provides PL the best opportunity for him to reach his potential.

Who's team is this going to be for the next 5-10 years? If I were asked to choose between Sheifele and Laine as a player to build around its Sheifele. He is more like an Yzerman/Crosby/Messier leader that can have a long term organizational impact.

Coaches are hired to be fired and this is another one of those years where the team needs to show progress.

Laine sure does have lots of goals, much like Jimmy Carson and Rick Nash did during their teenage years. Those players do share something in common with Laine and that is that they peaked at 19. The other players that scored more than him by that age are Hawerchuck, Gretzky and Lemieux. Difference between them and Laine is that they were all centers and were making players better around them from the very outset.

I would trade Laine while he still has value.

for the next 4 years i will, then it is truly sheifele's team. Ideally we keep them all. If forced to trade a player I would rather get the return for Laine than either of Wheeler or Scheifele at this time.

ie. we keep Wheeler, Sheifele and return for Laine with the jets.

Carson continued to score just below the rate he started on due to injuries, and Nash isn’t a comparable due to the era he started in.

Additionally, you aren’t taking into account the known quantity that is Laine’s ludicrous shot. It’s measurably better than anyone else’s. We know this.

Wheeler is already in decline, and should clock in at around the mid-range of 2nd line forward this season. He’s underpaid for his prime whilst 2 years into a somewhat quick decline.

Laine’s last season may already be better than Wheeler in 19-20, and I love Wheeler
