Great blog! Far too many fans judge whether a player should make the team based solely on how many points they get in the preseason and it really does have more to do with it than just that. Same goes with how many judge players on their development, it has more to do with every day life than just "getting better on the ice".

Good informed information shared, Bill, let's hope it is taken by the armchair GMs and coaches and not just brushed off. I honestly believe that many vocal fans think that they personally can better judge when the young high prospects are ready to replace some current seasoned players...and want them up ASAP. Sadly, too many ignore the fact that timing is offen the key, and that the professional people, who have many years in the business actually have a better handle as they view the players up close and personal...and key on certain aspects that we Fans cannot see, no matter how closely we follow our team.

Bill, you have shown some of the subtle, less obvious things organizations consider...above advanced Stats and simple eye tests. I remember Bobby Clarke spending some time in the minors before coming up to a lesser talented team...and when he was ready, he never looked back.(*)

It's somewhat amusing how Fans complain about high prospects not being promoted fast enough...and then complain when they are, but aren't playing up to the Fans' expectations. Patrick is one example; damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Anyway, thanks for providing us what we come here to get; needed inside information above the sexy rumors some put out...anyone can blog they hear a player wants X million per year, but it takes a better blogger to actually not.

EDIT: (*) it has been pointed out to me that Clarke was NOT called up in midseason...please ignore that part of my reasoning, as it doesn't support it. LOL

I brought up the same issues in a previous thread on how there is a lack of understanding on what it takes for a young player to make the NHL team. I'll repeat that no question we'll see many complaints if young favored players are sent down and don't make the team.

Bobby Clarke never played in the minors. He went straight from Flin Flon to the Flyers.

Funny, I clearly remember when the local news reported that he was "called up", and that was during the season. I'll have to check...possibly back then players could play in juniors and be called up to the NHL from there...that would be the only way that could happen, unless my memory has totally gone to pot...I remember hearing it as clear as if it was yesterday. Hmmm

EDIT: Quick check shows that Clarke play 76 games in 1969-70, so I'm now thinking that what I heard and vividly recall was the announcement that he made the team out of camp...unless he was called up a game or two into the season; I do recall them saying at the time that they felt he was needed.

This being the case, that example doesn't backup my case...I thank you for the appreciated fact check, and I'll edit the original post correcting it. Thanks again.

Excited to see how AV runs a camp. I think he's got a good deal of talent to work with here. Maybe even more than the NY roster he somehow managed to get to the Finals with.

cant Help but think the metro is there for the taking if they can start hot (for a change) there’s a lot of good teams but Washington is still the team to beat but I don’t expect a 110 point season out of em

If guys like Andreoff make the team over talented young players, it would be disconcerting to say the least.

I would not find it disconcerting. It's only a temporary situation.

I wouldn't be too surprised or upset to see Andreoff as the 13th forward. It's probably not ideal for the first-year pros or one of NAK, Robstov, or Vorobyev to be in the press box. Probably one of those three lands a spot on the 3rd or 4th line to start the season.

Maroon signs with Tampa . Amazing how they always seem to be able to add players with so many stars under contract. They still need to sign Point, but they have the cap space to do so.

Andrew Luck retiring. Giving his team notice right before the start of the season. Can you imagine if a starting QB pulled this in Philly?
