One of the reasons the 'Hawks could end up with more goals scored than last year, IMHO, is the vet FA acquisitions and their willingness and ability to go to the front of the net.
A dimension not so prevalent in recent years.

Is he still celebrating from when he won the cup?

That's got to suck. You fail the drug test, the whole world knows, and now the Caps are probably very very concerned about the money they invested in him.

If they score 270 goals and the defense does improve, I see more than 40 wins between Crawford and Lehner.

If the Hawks get only 40 wins, they would need an unrealistic 15-18 OTLs to get into playoff range ... so ... I suppose the good news would be they would be back in the draft lottery with a shot at Lafreniere.

They must not feel that the Hawks will improve defensively like we do.

Darth, anything in the article about the defense?

Because adding 2 top 4 D and a Vezina finalist wasn't enough.

And must believe that there won't be ANY improvement on the PK with the additions added (both forward wise and on defense)

The Hawks D game will improve.

The top dogs will be under less pressure to carry the team and will score a bit less.

The overall depth of the group will help keep the scoring from dropping too much.

The much maligned (by me!)Corey Pronman must have the Blackhawks Farm system rated in his top ten.

It is not like all of us here haven't felt very encouraged by what we see, and his list also includes ALL the players 23 and under, so that includes the "already arrived", and although these are JUST lists, it is a positive sign when the still in a rebuild Red Wings is ranked #13 below the Blackhawks.

Whether the outside sources of too many youngsters at positions, Cap crunch and strategies to wade through major league roster limits including that Seattle expansion in 2012, it is good to know there IS some capital to invest in and use as the constant year to year roster adjustments happen.

Nothing we don't already know. Stan improved the defense with Maatta and de Haan which help overall and specifically on the PK.

I am ok WITH the addition of two top four dmen. But they are nothing great, merely an improvement over last season. Maata will be gone once a couple kids are ready. Probably Murphy but it is a tricky situation with him

He represents one of the two dmen who willingly can physical. Sooner or later dmen will.loose jobs if they are poor skaters

Washington Capitals centre Evgeny Kuzentsov has been suspended for four years from international hockey after testing positive for cocaine.
- BetweenTheDots

It’s rare for an athlete to test positive for cocaine since it’s typically out of your system in 1-2 days and 4 days at the most. He could’ve said he was unreachable or on vacation to push back the test in order for it to clear. This is just dumb.

Maatta, de Haan and Murphy are likely placeholders until the D prospects are ready. If some don't make it I could see Murphy sticking around longer.

That was my thought too. Can't remember if it was him last year or Wheeler ranking the farm systems, but they had the Hawks at #14 based on the amount of prospects they felt had a legit shot at the NHL.

I would have to think a bit more high end talent was able to get them into the top 10 for this year.

Not sure where you had him, but I think 2 years ago, Sikura was listed as their top prospect sometime during the season with DeBrincat not counting since he was already on the team. Might not have been the Athletic but remember seeing that somewhere.

This is the NHL CBA section on penalties for positive drug testing. I know there are many appeals and other hearings that could be involved, but does this mean that Kusnetzov is also out for 20 games?

47.7 Disciplinary Penalties.
(a) Positive tests for performance enhancing substances on the Prohibited Substances
List will result in mandatory discipline as follows:
192
ARTICLE 47 47.8-47.8
(i) for the first positive test, a suspension of twenty (20) NHL Games without
pay, and mandatory referral to the SABH Program for evaluation and
possible treatment;
(ii) for the second positive test, a suspension of sixty (60) NHL Games
without pay, and mandatory referral to the SABH Program for evaluation
and possible treatment;
(iii) for the third positive test, a "permanent" suspension, although a Player so
suspended can reapply for discretionary reinstatement after a minimum
period of two (2) years by making an application to the Program
Committee. 47.7 Disciplinary Penalties.

The NHL put out a statement saying, "Unlike the IIHF, cocaine is not considered a performance enhancing drug and is therefore not a Prohibited Substance under the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program."

"Instead, it is considered a drug of abuse that is tested for and for which intervention, evaluation and mandatory treatment can occur in appropriate cases."

"Here, we understand that Mr. Kuznetsov has voluntarily sought help through the education and counseling program provided for in the NHL and NHLPA collective bargaining agreement and has agreed to a regular testing protocol relating to his involvement with that program."

Evgeny will also meet with NHL Commish Gary Bettman to discuss his behavior.
