Carol Schram: Looking at the Canucks' third-rounders, scouting changes and player tidbits A closer look at the impact of the third-round pick the Vancouver Canucks sent to Tampa Bay in the J.T. The price in the JT Miller deal was high. I don't believe they're at the stage to be doling out high picks. It's a gamble that may bite them in the ass.

Sven plays into being tradeable, Canucks just miss the playoffs and Petey/BB hit 70+ points each= sucessfull year for me. Oh and QH hits 40

It's not a gamble if Benning gets an extension.

That deal will play a part of that decision. I don't know a lot about Miller, I get he's a young proven NHL player but you always need to be stocking the shelves. Didn't we learn from the MG days? The only difference was when he ran the team the table for the most part was already set.

Our shelves are stocked, we need to give them the opportunity to succeed. Miller also has resale value in 3 years. Rushing prospects makes you Edmonton, or Buffalo, or etc. EP, Bo, Boes almost carried us to the playoffs. They are ready to insulate with proper top 6 players and better defense to go that extra mile.

Yeah the next GM should be the one making those types of trades, Benning should just build the core so the more picks the better, but I think FA really wants playoffs for the 50th anniversary.

Yes we know. Would have agreed if we were still building around the Sedins, Kesler, Burrows and Lou but the difference is now we are building around Peterrsson, Hughes, Boeser Horvat and Demko. This is a better crop of FA's attracted here now with Miller, Ferland, Myers and Benn as they see the core we have to build with now. Sure Vrbata and Venek were good signings for the most part but LE, Gagner and a few others were brutal. Is what it is. This team is finally changing post-Sedins and for the better. Players can see that too as it's all of a sudden an attractive market with top core talent.

Thanks Carol. Paying with draft picks is not appealing given Canucks early stages of climbing up the rankings. At least they have next year's 3rd that is a deeper draft and kept this years higher 1st @ 10th.

I called it over a year and half ago that ownership wants this club in the PO's for the 50th anniversary (along with a few others) and moves would be made to make it happen. Having said that I though they would go after a 'couple' of FA's not 4 of them. I'm still fuzzy on the Myers deal as I was never a huge fan of him in WPG but that might change here. But do like the Miller-Ferland-Benn deals. Very well done there filling team needs which is what needs to happen.

Where is the pat yourself on the back emoji?? lol

Geez Carol, that Troy Gasper story is heartbreaking. Kind of wish I didn't read about it. Depressed now.

Right. It's not like the Canucks stopped drafting well or don't have prospects to work in next couple of years.

The opposite of not signing FA or trading for Miller would have been a season of frustrating EP's, BB's, Hughes', Demkos' and to some extent Horvat's development.

Yeah, at some point you have to set up the new core players you have rather then let the team drift hoping for better draft picks in years to come.

Ownership has never wanted anything else. It's just retooling failed so it was called rebuilding now that there is a new core with Sedins etc gone.

Given this managements track record of not getting lotto wins and still picking gems its a safer bet they get what they need draft wise as they climb the standings.
