Tyler Cameron: Defining the Defence There have been some solid discussions happening the message board coming out of my last article where I looked at how crowded the Blackhawks defence is getting.

To recap, CHI currently has 15 D on NHL contracts. How does it all shake out?

I know players can go to Indy as you mention but I'm hoping the Holm acquisition doesn't impede playing time for possibly Beudin, Gilbert, Krys, or Carlsson at RFD.

Q wanted his D to be able to play on their offside...hammy did regularly. I don't think the righty/lefty break down is balanced. Some dman are actually more effective and comfortable on their off side.

Camp of course will shake alot of this out. But I suspect their will be moves/trades made during or after camp. Injuries and positive and negative performances will have alot to say with how this shakes out.

This maybe the most competitive camp for the hawks in the last 10 years.

Bowman is going to find a way get most of the prospects pencilled for Rockford the opportunity to play AHL. Someone like Tuuola could be a victim of the numbers game, yet the top prospects need to play and develop for two reasons

* injuries and trades could result in a recall
* plotting strategy for the roster come expansion actually should start this season.Don't muck up their playing time!
* A GM always thinks fast forward. Plays the what if scenario. Has an idea about what might happen, might transpire.

Bowman has set the table for a dynamic set of three pairs and they all might get a cup of coffee or more this season.

Bowman has the correct players if the top rated prospects pan out. Correct as in, one or both each pair can lug the puck and or distribute it relatively well.
No cement hands or slow as grandma skaters. Strong passing skill and good thinking offensive dmen can tilt the ice if they are, indeed, part of a five man cohesive unit attacking and swarming.

There is a need for some muscle and toughness too as playoff hockey shows us each season. But the blueline crew may be comprised more of the skilled good skating/passing. Whether Gus is part and parcel could depend upon the success of Colliton's new system but also may come from Gus himself stepping up.

AEL_FOX hinted late last blog of such happenstance. Actually AEL_FOX suggested we might see an improved Gus, defensively, because he has the capability within him.

A good future blog at maybe the half way point of season might discuss whether Gus has stepped up and whether any of.the prospects at Rockford have also met expectations in their early professional development.
We could be closer to that dynamic offensive defense when Gus and kids turn a corner[/img]

Happy Friday Tyler ! 8 weeks and counting down to the open of the 2019-2020 season.

Your defensive pairings look spot on when you look at the over arching picture of each players strengths or weaknesses.

Them one question mark that remains is who ends up being the 7th defenseman.

My personal opinion / feeling is boqvist gets a 9 game opportunity and then sent back down.

With Chicago acquiring De HAAN and Maatta, and Gus still a member of this team it's pretty much set the roster spots.

I also think Chicago doesn't want to burn up boqvist 1st year of his contract , when he might need a little bit more seasoning in Rockford.

I also think Stan is looking at the expansion and 4 years from now Keith, toews and Kanes contracts all expire which opens up about 27 million in cap space to resign all these young promising prospects to new contracts.

Good blog Tyler, đź‘€ looks like you took a peek at my latest armchair GM. The problem I see for the Blackhawks is Koekkoek and Dahlstrom have to pass through waivers to be sent to Rockford.

You’d probably like to NOT lose them - at least until the expansion draft - but you’re talking about the 7/8 defensemen - and probably soon to be 8/9 or lower.

If they get claimed, so what.

How often to you plan to attend Winterhawk games? I want to make more of an effort to see the Giants this year.

All this discussion about who plays and who sits seems to be a good problem to have. Anxious to see how the Central shakes up this year with much improved Hawks, Avs, and Stars teams. I can see those three being the three top teams in the central as i think the Blues were lightning in a bottle, Nashville can't get out of its own way and Winnipeg somewhat regressing.

It doesn't matter how many games Boqvist plays if he's in Rockford. The 9 game rule only applies to players like Dach who end up going back to the CHL. Regardless of how many games Boqvist plays, this is the first year of his ELC.

Back when Mom was still with us, it was darn near every Sat game possible except during WJC time. I avoid going up there for a couple years. Finally went back season and saw Joki play and didn't like what I saw..

I'm eyeing the game on Nov 24th against the Blades and the Teddy Toss game in Dec for right now.

If Dach goes back to the Dub that will be a good game. The Blades don't come to Vancouver this year. I don't think the Hawks have any prospects that will be visiting Vancouver this season. The Hawks 2019 4th round pick, Michal Teply, plays for the Winnipeg Ice (formerly Kootenay Ice) but again, they aren't coming to Vancouver.

Not concerned at all as long as Dach impresses, but aside from that, I agree.

Speaking of Dach, I'm confused about the NHL-CHL transfer rules. I know Dach can play 9 games without burning up a year on his ELC, but:
A) if he plays more than that, can they still send him down to the CHL and just burn a year on his contract?
B) do the games have to be in the beginning of the year? Could they call him up for 9 games at the end of the season?

My only real worry about keeping Dach on the team is that he plays well enough the first 9 games to stay in the NHL, but then regresses to the point where he's press-boxed most nights. That could really hurt his development.

And that is my biggest peeve with the W. We get to see a player once during his time in W if he's any good and he plays in the east..and not at all if it's during WJC time.
