https://theathletic.com/1...awks-in-a-12-team-league/

The Athletic had an interesting article recently (not by Powers) about what teams would look like if the NHL contracted to 12 teams and the contraction draft was according to a set of rules and parameters.

Here is the projected Blackhawks lineup drafted by Lazerus. The 2nd link is his reasoning for why he drafted the way he did. I know, many here aren't fans of his but this exercise was just for sh!ts and giggles.

DeBrincat - Toews - Atkinson
Teravainen - Scheifele - P Kane
E Kane - Couture - Keller
Saad - Danault - Schmaltz

Keith - Carlson
Brodie - Trouba
de Haan - M Vlasic

Hellebuyck
Grubauer

Notable Hawks on other teams:
Canadiens: Strome (4C)
Rangers: Gustafsson (3rd pair), Lehner (backup)

Notable Hawks not on any team:
Shaw, Seabrook, Murphy, Maatta, Crawford

Play Maatta on the 2nd pairing and PP, then trade him if his stock goes up. He could potentially land a 1st rounder, as he is a talented offensive D when given the chance. I assume I am honestly shocked at all the LD you guys acquired. Gustafsson is basically pushed out of the lineup after notching 60 points??? It just doesn't add up to trade for DeHaan and Maatta each making 4M+ per season and playing behind Keith. Or is Keith available?
- bikeguy99

Although Keith is in phenominal shape, at his age (35), I am hoping he doesn't have to play 25+ minutes a night. He has been replaced by Gus on PP1 ( and probably Seabrook on PP2 ), and hopefully he will see a lot less PK time. I assume that was one of the reasons for both DaHaan and Maata, besides when Stan made the Maata trade, he probably didn't think DaHaan would be available.

I think the Holm signing is an insurance policy id Boqvist needs to play with the Hogs. Solid swedish pro to help lay center field for Boq to run wild. (Hammer to soupy)

Colliton is def using his Swede connection.

That's quite a bit of money to pay someone in Rockford? Hmmm swedish, good all around game, isn't Boqvist swedish, this smells like a Jamal Mayers signing. I believe the Hawks just hired a tutor for Adam.

Yes. 2 way deals are cheaper if the person is sent down to Rockford. Different money values, in Holm's case (I think, so don't quote me on it) 700k in the NHL & 400k in the AHL. Some one-way deals are waiver exempt though, like Sikura.

Waivers and 1-way/2-way contracts are completely unrelated to each other. Waivers affects the ability to move guys to and from Rockfish far more than a two-way contract.

That's why I started off with yes, to answer your question. I know how waivers work moving between NHL & AHL, it's just the salary difference of the different contracts. You just didn't comprehend what I said (wink)

Without question. It is near the top of the list that drives me bonkers (of course, that is a short drive).

Edit - not directed at Ty, just a general thing.

Maybe Stan wants to win ALL THE CUPS?!
- Assman22

Not sure if you're joking but you may be right. What better environment to have prospects in than one where there is good leadership with the potential to be contenders regardless of level of league.

Just not the dreaded cacoon posse.....

Btw, are you on a one-way or two-way deal with the airline? I know you're waiver exempt at this point.

Seems like Bowman and company got 3 unexpected but positive surprises this off season with both de Haan and Lehner being suddenly available and pulling the 3 ball in the draft lottery.

Besides literal money in salaries, all that cost them was Forsling and Forsberg.

Yep and in a way it cost nothing as neither guy wanted to come back here. Onward and upward!

Forsling will be the #1D in Carolina and Forsberg will be the starting goalie. Plus Stan lost out on all that (glorious) cap space. I see these moves for what they truly are, a complete and total Bowman fail.

Better to have too many than not enough. Gus will be in the lineup, but possibly sheltered 5v5 with Seabrook (unless he shows great improvement on D). Maatta and de Haan are likely not going anywhere until/unless one of our prospects shows that they can take a spot. Both of them are movable and the Hawks will need extra space next offseason to sign DeBrincat and possibly Strome.

Keith is not going anywhere unless he wants to. He is still the best overall defenseman on the team. You are not the only one who is confused by the volume of D-men we've acquired. My guess is that Stan is gong to ride out training camps and preseason to see if someone needs a d-man. If so, he makes a trade. If not, he shuffles the lower levels.

Damn it. I like Lehner. Chicago keeps getting players I like. I'm iffy with Pat Kane as a human, but his vision on the ice is the BEST in the league and one of the best ever. I need to hate the Hawks. I like Alex, Shaw and Keith. I do not like Seabrook nor Toews. Talk more about them please.

Dude! We just got done going back and forth for like four pages on the last blog about Seabrook and Toews and the varying opinions of their crappiness.

Congrats on the Cup. Why haven't you resigned Maroon yet?

If going to do this should do it with 6 teams.
