Ok ok ok.
So it's like this.
If you eat 10 tacos a day, you're more likely to get hot sauce on your shirt.
If you don't eat tacos, no hot sauce issues.
It may look like the non-taco eating, clean shirt wearing individual is having a better time.
They aren't. They have no tacos. The lack of sauce is coincidental.
That's all I got today. |

The giveaway/takeaway argument, to me, is a lot like the hits category. Analytics have started to figure out that if you have a large number of hits, it means you don't have the puck a lot, which usually means you aren't a good team. Conversely, if you have a lot of giveaways, it means you do have the puck a lot, which is good. That's not to say that giveaways themselves are good. They're obviously not, but the increased possession generally outweighs the negative effects that giveaways have. - buffalofan19
Matt (frank)ing Ellis says bang on.
The giveaways stat is as useless as +/-. It can only be used, in any situation, as a small piece of the big puzzle. Takeaways, while also not all-encompassing, is a much more useful stat, but also a small piece of the puzzle. |

I believe Rod Brind’Amour and the management group there wanted him gone due to the fact he doesn’t come back past his own blue line but yea he can deposit a feed from Eichel so all is well.
I don’t expect to hear a negative peep out of this board over the next 8 seasons regarding his play and eventual cap hit that’s all I know. - Swedish_Jesus
He had 37 goals 2 years ago

This is the kind of logic that should be used in hockey analytics and highschool text books. I'd have a 4.0 forever. |

I really can't with that argument
It's the craziest thing
If the only thing that changed was Skinner being traded then I would at least listen to it with an open mind
But better coaching, much better goaltending, a 20 point improvement from Aho, and like 5 major players from the previous year were traded
But no it's Jeff Skinner's fault |

Summing up my thoughts/opinions on the subject.
Skinner is not elite defensively, or even good defensively when he actually has to play defense in the defensive zone. The reason he and his linemates get so many O zone starts is so he doesn't have to play defense in the traditional sense of the term, not because he's so bad it per say, but because he is an elite scorer that we want to have the puck in the o zone. When his line is controlling the puck in the o zone essentially he is paying defense because the other team doesn't have the puck to play offense. Also, o zone takeaways is a part of playing defense. It is taking who know's how many future scoring chances from the opponent. This is why offensive zone possession numbers have been a huge point of emphasis in the modern NHL.
Skinner scores goals and drives offense, that's what he does. Eichel drives possession, moves the puck with his legs and sets linemates up, that's what he does. I don't care how many assists Skinner does or doesn't have. That's not who he is and that's not what got him paid 9MM. He is elite. It would have cost a TON to replace him. Had we not replaced him we would have been far worse off. His stats say so, the "eye test" says so. Now, they just need to keep developing the youth and building around the top end talent they have. |

The problem is that wingers don't matter, and if they hypothetically did (they dont), he's not good enough to be one of the ones who could matter, if it were possible for them to matter, which it isn't |

I think it means there's no consensus here on what a dimension is. Before the debates here the last few weeks, I always considered scoring, setting up scoring, and defense as the 3 dimensions. That makes Skinner one dimensional. I didn't invent this. I think this is generally how it's discussed and written about. If you consider forechecking or drawing penalties as dimensions, then there's a lot of dimensions in your universe, and very few players would be considered one dimensional. Girgensons is a strong forechecker, Larsson draws penalties....are they really not one dimensional? |
