That he was and a lot of that falls on him but some of it was the horrific no defense system Weight had in place. How much either or was to blame for his numbers is debatable.

Well Jaro’s Number were dreadful under weights defense optional structure as well.
After joining The Bruins he had a .922 s% vs the .906 with the Islanders in 2017-18.
Could it be a coincidence of course but I’ll put my money on the new coaches and systems played being a big part of the goalies turn around.

Let’s just say with Mitch Koran and Piero Greco islanders have the best in the business mentoring goalies. Throw in a new arena at Belmont Park on Long Island and very young talented players in the system the future looks very bright. Always Believe !! 😎

If those two were really “the best in the business” they wouldn’t be slugging it out on the island.

Except Sorokin will be a Gusev-type player, so the islanders are going to be shelling out like $10-12M per year on goaltending with Varlamov and Sorokin. Literally no reason to bid 4 years on Varlamov. Stupid length there.

So you’re saying Barry Trotz isn’t the best in the business? Logic would dictate that, since Trotz is also “slugging it out on the island.” You’d have to be an idiot to go after Trotz or Korn/Greco. Guess there’s always one!

Absolutely I agree it is a large contributing factor but Lehner was cool as a cucumber in net the guy deserves some credit.

OMG, the guy deserves credit no doubt. He turned his life around and went through a lot. I think he will always be grateful to the Islanders for giving him a shot.
It will be interesting to see how he fairs with Chicago’s D in front of him. They gave up more goals per game (3.5) than every other team last year except for Ottawa(3.6).

Totally. That's why I thought it made the most sense to bring him back...whatever credit goes to systems, coaches, or Lehner himself, it worked last season...why not just sign up for part two and call it a day? And I think that...11th-hour negotiations and ultimatums aside...Lehner would have been back if the organization was determined to make that happen.

But, Varlamov seemed to be where they were leaning, especially given the news that they tried to get him last year. It's not like he was a fallback option they picked up off the scrap heap...he was their target. They obviously see something in him, and I doubt it's just that he might help get some other guy from Russia here someday. I'm not sure how much you can really upgrade on what they got from goaltending last season...or why you'd even need to...but they gotta like something about him, and I'd be surprised if they were so far off the mark that goaltending becomes a big liability.

I’ll go with the staff and feel good about the GT this year.

As far as Sorokin, I doubt he leaves the money behind in mother Russia.
Just my opinion of course.

The Isles should have kept Lehner around. Sorokin shares the same agent as Varlamov and speaks Russian so it makes sense the Isles try to pair them up but if Sorokin decides to stay in Russia this plan will have backfired in a major way.

Well Sorokin doesn't play for another NHL team so Lou has had over a year to discuss this with Theofanus.

I have plenty of faith that Lamoriello didn't kick Lehner to the curb to overpay a bit on Varlamov without some sort of confirmation from Theofanus that Sorokin was planning to come over next season when his contract is up.

Always possible that CSKA backs up a dump truck full of cash on Sorokin's lawn and he changes his mind, but I'm sure Lou wouldn't have done this without a commitment from the goaltender and his agent.

Should have just signed Lehner for 4 years 5 mill AAV imho.
- LeafGuy89

Yup! Lets just hope Varls can stay out of police custody this season! Guy doesn't like his eggs overdone. This contract had way too much term for a 31 year old tendy. Guess this team only accepts players over 27 now.

This would be a super sick burn if the courts didn't acquit him due to lack of evidence and then award Varlamov $126k in the civil trial

Sure the Sorokin connection could have some influence in Lou signing Varlamov however the report was they wanted him before this off season and it didn't work out. I just don't think Lou and Co are going to sign a goalie for 5 years because it MIGHT help get a kid who hasn't come here in the past to come. Also for him to come here he is going to leave a ton of $$$$ on the table.
Money talks BS walks. Hope he comes but........
