Should have just signed Lehner for 4 years 5 mill AAV imho.

Still don't think he is coming over ....ever. If he wanted to be in the nhl he would have been here already. He will have to take a pay cut for the first two years. Last but not least, Ladd is on your team....

Unless Lou's theory was that having a fellow Russian (and a friend, I believe I read) taking turns in goal would be more of a draw for Sorokin to finally make the move to the NHL....

Nice write up Ben! Isles should be in good shape if Sorokin comes over.

So the Islanders are set for years because they have a really good 34 year old back up to cover concerns about an inconsistent 31 year old who might be a great mentor for a potentially awesome goalie who might not come to this country to play in this league?! OK. Good luck with that. I mean might work out great but seems a tad uncertain.

I'm not saying your wrong but I don't see how you could not make some facocta argument like this for most of the teams in the NHL.

Just in time for Dipietro to retire.

Amazing how that works out.

Let’s just say with Mitch Koran and Piero Greco the islanders have the best in the business mentoring goalies. Throw in a new arena at Belmont Park on Long Island and very young talented players in the system the future looks very bright. Always Believe !! 😎

U make decent argument but what Korn & Co has done last year and prior years to G's, I'll take a chance on whomever they coach

I think most are looking at this as a weighted gamble(well it seems lameriello is). I for one am not a fan of lameriello going about it this way there’s too much of a chance of it blowing up in his face. Just have to hope Varlamov finds consistency, Greiss holds it together, and Sorokin comes over if that’s in fact the whole reason why we’re doing all of this in the first place. In other words I agree with what you’re saying for the most point.

If it works out people will think it was pure genius, if it doesn't it was a horrible plan.
In reality it's exactly what you said; a weighted gamble.

We will see how it goes. I'd guess fine; but if not you also have some flexibility to deal with it (meaning limited term on Greiss and cap space).

I’m not big with the idea of sucking up to prospects to get them here if that’s actually what we’re doing. I’d love to see Sorokin come over but if we need to appease him to this level he can stay right where he is as far as I’m concerned.

There’s a little risk, but the goalie position doesn’t concern me that much.

As long as Varlamov is and stays healthy, I don’t see why he can’t have a season like what Lehner had. I mean, Greiss had a season like what Lehner had…there’s obviously one or more organizational reasons for what Lehner and Greiss both accomplished — the system, goalie coaches, both…whatever. It’s not a stretch to imagine that Varlamov benefits from that this season and puts up solid overall numbers.

I still don’t get the logic behind the whole Varlamov/Lehner episode. Varlamov always seemed to me like a solution in search of a problem. But, even if it turns out to be a case of over-thinking, I don't think it's some enormously risky gamble, either.

Goalies will be the least of the problems. I think it was a mistake for Robin not to take that 2 year deal. He had one good year and I thought the Isles deal was more than fair. This team will sink or swim on the forwards. This is the huge area of concern.

I don’t know, you look at Varlamov’s numbers, injuries, and inconsistencies and I don’t know how you could easily say he can have a season just like Lehner did? Can he? Sure he can but that to me is quite an assumption IMO. I hope it all works out in the end of course but it’s tough for me to assume that right now. He could be the benefit of all that you say with our team defense, etc. I guess we’re going to be putting that notion to the test in a couple of months but it’s far from something I’m going to just assume will work out.

Well the way the story was told you have to think the guy would have an opportunity to negotiate. I would think most players would fire their agent if they accepted the first offer that came across their desks😂

I think after Lou had to wait on JT and Panarin he was not waiting on Robin. Lou probably figured we took a chance on this guy and really helped him have a nice season and he is making us wait. Right or wrong this might have been Lou's feelings. I wanted Robin back but Isles have enough to worry about with the forwards.

Kind of is what it is at this point. We’ll see what happens. Maybe Varlamov will be better than Lehner who da (frank) knows?😂

It's possible Varlamov will be better than Robin. I trust the Isles people on goalies. It's a shame Korn and Greco cannot work their magic on the forwards.

Lehner was hardly the picture of consistency through his career up to last season. It's just as much of an assumption that last season wasn't an anomaly, and that Lehner will replicate numbers he's never put up before in a full season of play.

Unless we assume that Lehner's numbers last season were in part a product of something going on in the organization, which isn't so crazy considering Greiss also put up career numbers.

So, my assumption is based on Varlamov, being a pretty decent goalie already, getting a similar boost in numbers. I can't say it'll definitely work out, but I can't say Lehner is definitely a .930 goaltender, either. Add it all up, and I don't think there are that many more questions going in with Varlamov than there would be if they had re-signed Lehner (which, by the way, I would have preferred).

Agreed, Lehner in my mind was a bigger question mark last year than Varlamov this year. Also Greiss was dreadful in the 2017-18 season and turned it around under Korn’s tutelage and the teams new defensive system last year.

Yeah that’s fair given Lehner’s former numbers albeit when the guy was drunk and high most of the time. I believe him doing well last year was a combination of him being sober and our system but that’s all opinion based of course. Unless the Hawks have no defensive structure or he starts partying again he’ll put up good numbers imo but you’re right it is an unknown to an extent. Like I said in my last post it is what it is at this point so hoping these guys are right about Varlamov. Hopefully he puts it together he has four years to figure it out.

That he was and a lot of that falls on him but some of it was the horrific no defense system Weight had in place. How much either or was to blame for his numbers is debatable.
