I've been advocating to resign Brodie long-term to provide stability to the backend, considering Hamonic will likely be gone as a UFA (Winnipeg), Kylington as well through the expansion draft and Giordano not getting any younger even if he's still a beast.

But now with news that Ristolainen has asked to be traded, maybe there's a way to trade Brodie without losing any talent back there, short or long term.

Just an idea...

To CGY : Ristolainen, Sobotka (8.9 total)
To BUF : Brodie, Frolik, 2nd round pick (8.9 total)

Buffalo gets rid of 2 players they don't want anymore (Sobotka might not even make the roster), and adds depth that will help them get back to the playoffs. This year's cap space is a wash, but they free a lot beyond.

Cgy gets a replacement for Brodie that is signed for 3 more years at less than Brodie will likely make on his new contract, they can bury Sobotka in the minors to free 1 more million, and suddenly they have enough cap space to resign Tkachuk confortably AND sign a guy like Vanek or Maroon for depth on the wings.

Again, just an idea.

This idea that some people seem to have that Andersson is ready to play on the top pairing, which makes Brodie expendable, is ludicrous. The dude has 90 career games, pretty much all of them in a sheltered role on the third pairing. How does that make him ready to play 20+ minutes where every shift is against the other teams' best players.

Is also fairly common for players to take a step back in their second NHL season. If their goaltending works out, the Flames are legit Cup contenders. Do you really think the Flames are going to move out one of the three guys on the roster who plays RD while putting all the pressure to take his place on a guy with one year of experience? They're not going to have any money to bring anyone else in and there's no one else in the system who is even close to an NHL player with a right handed shot. Buying out Stone means Brodie is 100% staying, probably for longer than just the year too.

If only Buffalo had a bit of cap space... with RR looking for a trade, would have been a near ideal trade to flip Frolik and Brodie there. Maybe Tre can work a little 3 team magic with Bogosian's cap hit moved elsewhere...

I agree that they need to keep Brodie as they are too thin on the right side. Of course it leaves the question on who can they move out to free up the space needed to sign Tkachuk. Frolik and a pick for a later pick ? Looking around the league, cap space is the most valuable asset a team can have right now. Kind of pissed that BT hasn't done it already as it's getting worse and worse. TO was smart to move Marleau when they did...doubt that they could get that done now.

The smart move for Treliving would be to try and get Brodie resigned now. After seeing what Gardiner's going through, he might not be that eager to risk free agency.

Saw this after my post, agreed, though Buffalo also has a bit of a glut on D, so thought it might be more likely they try to offload Bogosian's hit than Sobotka. Don't mind the thought of Sobotka coming here at all though if we can bury that cap hit. Don't know that $1M gives them quite enough room for Chucky, but it's more than we have today.

Well now there's no way we're trading Brodie without a solid d-man coming back.

Yep, that's been my train of thought for a few months now. At worst we're losing him in the expansion draft, which means we would be keeping Kylington. Not too bad.

In any case we have to find a way to keep either Brodie or Kylington in the fold, otherwise our D will look terrible in a few years.

With Vali out, any thought of trading Brodie is out the window unless we're getting another D-man back.

I never thought we should just move out Brodie as a cap dump, only if we can get a legit piece back that can help us now. The Flames have a few players I would move as a cap dump before Brodie. With Vali out now though it becomes way less likely we move him at all.

Heard Ristolinen wants out of Buffalo.
here's an idea, Brodie and Jank for Ristolinen and maybe a pick.
Flames sheds out almost a million in the trade.
maybe flames will have enough sign Tkachuck and Mangiapane.

That makes zero sense for Buffalo. Ristolainen wants out because they brought in a bunch of RDs and he doesn't have a spot in the top 4. Why would they want Brodie? Risolainen is far more valuable to the Sabres as a trade asset than one year of Brodie. The Sabres also have literally zero cap space. How are they able to take on an extra million?

Yeah I do not see how a deal with Buffalo and Calgary would go down, its just not a viable option.

Sifting through CapFriendly, and there are almost no teams out there that would meet the Flames needs... Wonder if something like below might work

Flames receive Rasmus Ristolainen Scott Harrington ($5.4+$1.63) - ($4.3+$4.65)
Blue Jackets receive Michael Frolik $4.3 - $1.63
Sabres receive TJ Brodie $4.65-$5.4 and a pick?

Flames and Sabres both create cap space, Sabres replace Ras on the right side amiably, Jackets add some forward depth without really giving up anything they would really miss next year. Alternatively, flip Frolik and Brodie's landing spots and increase the return to the Sabres with Janko or something along those lines?

Pure hockey deal, Flames can risk exposing Ras next year, or sweetening the pot to protect their roster and are really in the same spot as they are with Brodie this year.

Keep Brodie, trade him at the TDL when V-Mak is ready to return full-time and Brodie's value is sky high.

Need to trade Frolik now though.

I hope they’re adding at the TDL. But if they’re out of it, yeah Brodie should be worth a lot. [url]

Again, makes sense for the Flames and no one else. Why do the Jackets want Frolik for a year and why would they give up Harrington to get him? Why do the Sabres want Brodie for a year when they're already overloaded with defence? They can do a lot better if they're trading Ristolainen.

It doesn't even really make sense for Calgary. They're trying to win a Cup this year, and that trade makes them worse.

Because Harrington isn't even needed CLB top 6, and Frolik is a more than useful 3rd line player on a roster that could use his defensive skills with higher octane offensive guys like Dubois, Atkinson, Wennberg and Bjorkstrand filling out most of the top 6. Alternatively, you send Brodie their way instead and he instantly takes Savard's spot and makes their top 4 better.

The acquisition of RR provides replacement value for Brodie, and Harrington is pure depth. Not to mention it creates over $1M in cap space, which provides room for signing Chucky AND AM, with possibly something left over to fill out the bottom six if they feel the need.

Buffalo gets a legitimate replacement for RR if they do decide to move him for a better locker room fit. If they prefer Frolik, send them Janko as well if that's what it takes to get it done.

Flames still need to get several things done this offseason, Chucky is at the top of the list. Without him, even during a short holdout, they are worse than they are without Brodie. They need the cap space to get this done, they need to acquire some added depth and they likely need to move Frolik to keep the locker room on an even keel this year.

Name one playoff team in the history of the NHL that traded away a top-pairing defenceman at the trade deadline. Playoff GMs are always panicking at the deadline that they don't have 14 NHL ready defensemen ready to go for playoff depth.

Not only that but the teams looking to rent Brodie are also going to be playoff teams who aren't going to be giving up anything useful.

The only way Brodie gets traded at the deadline is if the season is a disaster and they're not a playoff team.
