Can't argue with this, the way Brukie put his comments in it looked like he was arguing with himself. - blueshirts_fan

Gotta clear cap space to re-sign Jesper Fast - dashripdot
Love everyone who rips on Fast. Meanwhile on a really good team, as a fourth line winger, you need that type to win. |

Guy makes peanuts and is a solid homegrown NHLer - never understood the level of hate. He is one of our few later rounders who actually stuck. |

The guy is a perfect modern day NHL depth player: he fits really well on the bottom 6, but can slide up in a pinch if needed and not look lost. However, he makes just under 2 million which is not peanuts for that role. I'm 100% on board with letting him walk after the season. Anything can happen, but almost 0 chance he'd sign for anything less than 2 million and you just can't pay bottom 6 types that kind of money in the cap era. We have plenty of perfectly cromulent guys coming up like Morgan Barron who could probably replace him making the league minimum on an ELC. |

cornell poised to have a good year? they finished 9th last year, and hopefully barron has a big year - plays well and signs after the season. |

So what is the tipping point price tag for Fast? $2.5M? |

Honestly, I really wouldn't sign him for what he makes now. It was different a few years ago when we were close to competing and we had no real replacements. Currently we are rebuilding and we have several young players who I feel who could step in nicely and replace most of what Fast brought for half the price. For me it's a slam dunk not to resign Fast.
I don't want to sound like I'm knocking Fast, he's good for what he does. It's just not a good way to run the cap paying those type of players. |

Sorry, disagree. I think we have players that potentially can do that, but unsure any have that direct skill set. Boo Nieves? Brendan Lemieux likely fits the bill, but with a bit more offensive talent. But he will be pricey soon as well. Maybe McKegg or Di Giuseppe but Carolina let them go, so the jury is out there. |

Who also makes less and might have the exact same role as Fast while being younger, providing more offensive ability, and making less money. I've brought up Barron as a potential replacement. If Lias doesn't meet expectations, it's also possible that he could establish himself as a Malhotra type player while also making less money. To all the people who want to resign Fast, what exactly does Fast bring that's unique and worth signing him to 2+ million a year? Even if you can only replace 80% of what Fast does, but at 50% of the cost, it's much better worth it in the long run.
You just don't pay for bottom 6 players. Especially when you have suitable replacments of can sign a decent 4th liner like a Mckegg for a million tops.

He makes less now, maybe, but not for long. Plus, we don't know if he will accept the QO. Hopefully, he signs a two-year deal and stays under $1.85 mil. But that doesn't mean the team doesn't need both players.
Fast can move up and down the lineup. Play in the top-six when needed. Fill a spot on the penalty kill. Plus $1.85 mil, when minimum salary may close to a mil, is not a high salary. |

Happy for the Rangers and their fans.
It's about time teams like Toronto and the NYR go full scorched earth rebuild. Its exciting times, or will be soon, for Ranger fans. - systemtool

I don't disagree with that statement. My whole point is you don't pay guys like that over 2 million. One of the most exciting things about this team right now is the sheer quantity and quality of the youth coming up. We all know unless one gets moved or position changed that Buch, Kravs, and Kakko will have the top 3 RW on lock down for several seasons to come. You can't tell me out of all those young guys that you can't find one to play the remaining 8-9 min a night. I can see Kakko evolving into one of our best PK guys, so I don't even think we need to keep Fast around for that.
There's a real possibility that within a couple seasons we could be rolling 4 lines that can all score. There's no reason to have to employ a grinder for more money. |

Context: My post was tongue-in-cheek, and in response to the criticisms of signing Panarin and Trouba in light of the cap issues. Sure it's great to have a few role-players like that as long as they remain on cheaper contracts. |
