Ben Shelley: James Reimer could be the perfect fit as Hurricanes' backup goalie
- Ben.Shelley

Why? There are so so sooooo many goalies waiting for a shot. Why take an overpriced goalie destined for an 0.890 sv%. He has had declining stats in every catagory for the past 4 seasons. I am sure there are younger guys in the system with equal talents. Forsberg for sure, and I would even consider Nedelijkovic to be a better candidate. Its good the cap isn't an issue for you guys, or Reimer would be run out of town.

I believe it was a horrible mistake but, I hope I am proven wrong. He isnt worth league minimum.

Reimer will be traded if possible. They aren't going to let anything get in the way of Ned anymore. It's do or die time for the kid and they're going to give him his chance. Problem is the arbitrator gave Forsberg a one way deal and so that muddies the waters even further.

Chart goes:

Mrazek
Nedeljkovic
Reimer
Forsberg
Booth
Helvig

Kochetkov would probably slot in above Forsberg if he were to be in North America this year.

Nobody would take him, not even if you retained 50%. Unless you trade him for Lucic, he is retiring a Cane.

Much like Mckilhenny, Reimer is a solid personality to have in the dressing room.
Unlike Mckilhenny who is a good positional goaltender, Reimer relies on his reflexes and so needs to play a lot to stay sharp.
This has always been the crux of the problem with Reimer. If he plays a lot he is better than most backups but he is not good enough to be a starter. When he sits, as is the job of a backup, and gets rusty he is probably the worst backup in the NHL.

Reimer can be a case study in fan frustration. He can go 57 minutes of flawless goaltending, then do a mental check-out for 2 or 3 minutes and give up 3 goals.

The last minute/30 seconds of any period will be a high risk time for the Hurricanes.

He also has a frustrating tendency to flop on the ice in front of the net, while the puck is still in play. I don't know why he doesn't stay on his skates, but you're pretty much assured of at least 1 flop session per game and probably 2 or 3.

Right on, Jimbo.

The streakiness and inconsistency is his biggest Achilles heel. When he's "on" he can be solid.
