Looking forward to your breakdown on Hayden.

I'm a big fan and think he was misused/not appreciated in Chicago. There's a lot of potential to unlock with him IMO and I think we'll see that talent come out in NJ.

Not sure he will play much

He is behind
Hall
Hischier
Palmieri
Gusev
Hughes
Bratt
Coleman
Zajac
Simmonds
Wood
Zacha
And possibly boqvist if he makes the team

He should be solid forward depth and might be able to give a couple of those guys a run for a spot.

Maybe he'll be rotated in and out throughout the season?

It'll come down to what he shows in training camp and what type of 4th line the team decides they want to employee. If they want offensive/skill/speed wingers they have better options. If they want some grit he's got a chance.

It is a bit of a crowded field as the team has added a few players and has a few prospects that could push for a spot. You never know.

Great point.

He can certainly play the physical role if they want to have a grinding/punishing fourth line. Heck, he was the only guy on the Hawks throwing the body for awhile.

He also has some offensive/skilled chops that he showed some glimpses of. I'm wondering if that side will come out in NJ - depending on what they want to roll with, like you said.

He's the guy we traded Q for. He's a 4th line grinder with a little bit of skill.

Fights a lot but not particularly well. Think of him as the new Kurtis Gabriel....

Q's offensive numbers were better but despite his AHL success he couldn't do dink with the Devils.

Hayden put up 34 pts in 33 games his senior year at Yale but hasn't don't much in the NHL; although more then Q. So he's fighting to be a 4th liner.

Very good analysis. Clearly Greene is in his final season, and I don't see him being effective if he plays more than 14 minutes per night. He has been a great leader, and has a fantastic hockey iq, but his roster spot should be in jeopardy this season. If he logs big minutes, expect a career high in minor pims.

And to be honest, Mcleod should also be considered for that 4RW slot. At least we have NHL talent throughout all lines this season! Second half of last year, the bottom 6 looked like an ECHL lineup.

Good point. Mcleod will be looking to crack the lineup. Nathan Bastian did very well in a tiny sample last season. Kevin Rooney isn't a flashy player but Hynes liked what he did last season and he can play wing.

yup. McLeod or Boqvist for that 4th spot. They'll get ice time anyway. Injuries always happen. The cream will rise to the top during those callups and we'll know what to roll with come playoff time

I believe they deserve to be there, but at the same time, wonder if they would benefit more from top minutes in Bing

Jesper will start on the 3rd but then move to second because he's too damn good.

lol I just hope these kids end up looking as good as some of you think they will! I feel like every off-season we get excited for the new guys and young guys and half the time most of them don't meet or exceed expectations. This is why I'm cautiously optimistic about this crew of high-potential kids (and Gusev). One game at a time.

So is Zacha given their draft positions. That being said, they could still be great bottom 6 forwards. And his right shot gives him a chance at the roster

Needs to be set high given his KHL crossover comparisons. He did better than Panarin and Dadanov at the same age in the same league. Expectations for the 27 year old should be high. He shouldn't qualify, but he will be a calder candidate.

Didn't Reid Boucher do better then Steve Stamkos? Just saying.

I mean I'm very happy we traded for the Goose, but until he plays in the NHL there is no telling what you are getting. Same for Hughes and Boqvist for that matter.
They'll probably all be good players but you just never know. Until you know.

It's also much harder to get by with mediocre skills in the KHL compared to the OHL. We're getting a good player.
