After the Fenton hiring, it's clear that as fans on the outside, it's difficult to judge GM candidates who have never been NHL GM's before.

Fenton's name was commonly brought up by fanbases around the league whenever their team had an opening because people assumed he was Poile's smart right hand man.

Some dudes just aren't cut out to run the show and are better suited in specialized roles catered to their strength(s).

Waddell made a trade today in his capacity as Canes GM, so... not sure what the deal is. Maybe he's just being polite? Maybe he actually wants the job.... maybe he's just trying to figure out what other teams are actually offering for a GM so he has a dollar figure to ask Dundon for... dunno.

Except that Bill Guerin isn't a forward thinking, analytics using GM. By his own admission he has an old school mentality. Don Waddell is the best choice of the bunch.

I can just see Leipold in the Waddell interview...."So, you're saying you knew Niederreiter was better than Rask....you're hired"!

And as the new GM of the Wild, Waddell's first task is to continue on the path that he was on in Carolina...they were going to buyout Rask there, so he just does it here. Can you tell I'm not a Rask fan?

Honestly, I don't have an idea on who I would like to see as the next GM, but I do have a list of people that I don't want to see. Extreme NOs on Chia or Snow and probably a no on Hextall, as he seems to have some of the same problems as there was with PF in the fact that he explodes on people and only trusts a small inner circle. If Guerin is going to be "old-school" in his GM style as well, then the Wild should pass on him as well.

Maybe take a page outta the Twins book (and, dare I say, possibly the T-Wolves plan) and go with a GM that puts a lot of stock in analytics. The NHL is changing in how the game is played, so right now is the best time to jump on that thinking and be ahead of the curve.

So what is the best path? I am guessing trade older players with good value that just don't fit a rebuild? Spurgeon looks like a prime candidate. 29 years old, still great, and his final year! He would fetch a solid return. Zucker and Foligno as well? Nobody wants to touch the Suter/Parise deal, but when you look at how cheap the buyout is in 3 years time, paired with both of those guys have great seasons, they really aren't too bad at all.

Anyway, trade Spurgeon, Zucker, Foligno for some 1st round picks. Let Koivu retire, Tank, and start next offseason off with some prospects and 30M+ cap space to play with!

If there's a year to load up on lottery picks to try and get a game changer, this is it.

Not only that, but clearing out your good players and getting assets for them is a good strategy when you're old, only borderline competitive anyway, and there's an expansion draft looming.
