With the addition of subban I don't think butcher will see as much time on the PP at least not the first unit as he has prior so that may hurt his numbers but 5v5 may improve since we have more talent down the line up

I'm cool with the Butcher deal. We can comment on the points and minutes played, but that's because Butcher still needs to be sheltered--he can't play against top units yet. That's fine, but that's why I think this term and this $ make sense.

Love the deal, just wish it was a little longer. But I’m sure he’s hoping this deal brings him to a payday.

I thought bonuses didn't count against the cap?
I would've preferred longer too. Gotta hope we can develop a positive enough culture that we can re-sign these promising young players if they really do develop accordingly.

Yeah performance bonuses count against the cap, but there is a percentage that teams are allowed to go over the cap in order to pay the bonuses

If you have the cap space the bonuses will count in the current season. If not, they'll go against the cap in the next season.

Why a team like the leafs last year didn't add much at the deadline.

Butcher's on ice save percentage was sub 900, along with Vatanen and Severson. His ability to defend is basically contingent on his team having possession of the puck because in a zone pressure situation, these three culprits allow the most dangerous chances.

I don't expect Butcher or Vatanen's numbers in this department to improve much, but I think Severson is capable of playing a lot more defensive than he has. He was actually good for Team Canada at the IIHF, which surprised me.

A Butcher-Severson 2nd pair costs under $8m in space total, gotta love those numbers. Still Doomed.

I'm sure the corpse of Cory Schneider and Keith Kinkaid had nothing to do with their "on ice save percentage". What a garbage stat.

Great deal and term on the Butcher deal. He should not be playing sheltered minutes at all. Butcher should be playing Top-4 minutes with Severson or Subban on the right side and quarterbacking the 2nd PP unit. If it doesn't pan out, trade him before he becomes a UFA or just let him walk.

The beauty of the Devils is how much cap flexibility they have in the next 3 years. Even if Hall signs the 12 million next season, you can get the extra $6 mil from Simmonds contract and the cap increase. Greene and Vatanen's contracts can go to HHischier and Bratt. When Hughes and Gusev need contracts, Zajac, Palmieri, Coleman, and Subban are off the books.

Shero is building something nice here...and for the long-term.

I'm all for keeping Palmieri, Coleman and Subban if they earn it. Unless Subban really takes a downturn in the room, all 3 guys should provide enough skill and grit/leadership into their mid 30s. Palmieri and Coleman will just be 30 when there deals expire. I'd do another 4 years for each of them. Subban will be 33, so we'll see where he's at then.. probably won't get another 9mil per year deal.

It's crazy to think Butcher and Greene will be in our top 4 of left-side dmen.. unless Vatenen or Smith move over to the left and maybe bump Greene down. Greene is mid-pair on his absolute best day, and Butcher.. we'll have to see if he can handle the responsibility defensively. This is only his 3rd season.

possession metrics, zone entries, shot suppression. Stuff like that. I don't think counting stats like goals and assists are all that important because there is a lot of variance in that kind of stuff. A guys shooting percentage might just take a dip one season and just might have bad "puck luck" so nothing goes in but the guy is involved in a lot of high danger chances. This is something that happened with Max Domi when the Coyotes sold really low on the guy but there was no way he was going to have a career 3% shooting percentage with the number of changes he took.

Fantastic numbers! 8M for a legitimate NHL duo that is only improving! I am blown away. Smith and Subban could make up our potential top 4 for 18M. Bargain.

No extend Nico, 8 years at 7.25M AAV, and ideally Hall on a 4-5 year deal 11.5M AAV

KK and LJ are the reason we have Hughes. Plus a 3rd & 5th pick, and Carrick. They were Franchise players. Give them the respect they deserve boys!

Thanks. I’m old so I’m really an eye test guy but I know that can be misleading also.

"eye test" is fine when looking at the best players. you know the guys who are going to score a lot of points and are the stars. it's more about finding the good depth players that you might not be able to tell are good without some advanced stats.
